Just over 2 years ago, muckraker Michael Hastings texted his friends that he was "onto a big story", that he needed to "go off the radar" for a time. Hours later, his car was observed on a downtown LA street accelerating to maximum speed, careening out of control and crashing into a palm tree. The car's engine was thrown 50 yards, and Hastings's body was burned beyond recognition.
This article from Wired magazine describes technology that can control a car from a distance. Through his career, Hastings had uncovered embarrassing information about military officers and political officials and he had plenty of enemies. There was no investigation of the crash by either LA police or the FBI.
