Jimmy Carter thought the vice presidency was a “wasted national asset.” Walter Mondale, who died last week, changed that forever. Carter’s partnership with Mondale became a perfect match of Northern and Southern populism. Both politicians were intelligent, affable, and unpretentious. They liked each other. Walter Frederick "Fritz" Mondale served as the 42nd vice president of the United States from 1977 to 1981.
