“Michigan election law never gets amended, except when the party in power sees a way to enhance its own position,” he says. "Our voting system consists of whatever we inherited, modified by small changes designed to screw the party that’s out of power. So it’s no surprise that it creaks and shudders.”...

This is what American democracy looks like: A state in which the law allows candidates to challenge the system, to ensure voters that the process works like it’s supposed to. A big room full of workers and volunteers, carefully examining each ballot to make sure each voter’s voice was heard. A lot of time, because ensuring the integrity of the vote is the core of our American system. Diligence, because that’s the only way to ensure it’s done right.
