The Nation's elections expert Ari Berman, author of the popular new and vitally impo
rtant book "Give Us the Ballot," writes about efforts to bring the VRA's most important section back to life, and how many voters are being crippled by current legislation keeping them from the polls: new voter ID laws, curtailing of early voting, etc.
Reviving the VRA would help, in terms of future attempts at further suppression, but what about what's already in place in violation of the VRA? Let's ask this question and answer it! How can we make the revived VRA, if we can revive it, retroactive?
