Diesel cars and SUVs manufactured by Fiat-Chrysler have been equipped with smart software that tunes the engine for reduced emissions just during annual testing, but then defaults to the high-performance, high-pollution mode when the cars are on the road. Fiat-Chrysler has agreed to pay over $500 million, with $80 million going to California.
