CA Democrat Gov Newsom today signed a bill requiring Trump to release 5 years of tax returns before his name appears on CA’s 2020 primary ballot, 1st state to use a ballot slot as tax disclosure leverage.
Newsom: “The United States Constitution grants states the authority to determine how their electors are chosen, and California is well within its constitutional right to include this requirement."
When CA’s state legislature passed the bill along party lines two weeks ago, the Trump’s communications director Tim Murtaugh called the effort unconstitutional in a statement to Sacramento Bee.
“The Constitution is clear on the qualifications for serving as president; states can't add requirements on their own. The bill violates the 1st Amendment since CA can’t tell political parties which candidates their members can or cannot vote for in a primary election.”
