The Network for Public Education reports on a major investigation of charter schools that double dipped into federal funding for coronavirus relief. First the charters received public funding from the $13.2 billion allocated to public schools as part of the CARES Act. Then, on the advice of charter school lobbyists, many applied for funding from the $660 billion Paycheck Protection Program, for which public schools were not eligible. Charters enroll 6% of the nation’s students.Well-funded charters with ample funding were applying for and receiving large PPP awards.
