Bernie Sanders took some indirect but very clear shots at Hillary Clinton during a speech in Iowa, attempting to contrast his record with hers on various issues. When Clinton sat down with Rachel Maddow on Friday, Maddow pressed her on her husband signing the Defense of Marriage Act, the infamous anti-gay legislation. Clinton told Maddow that DOMA was a “defensive action” to prevent something worse. Sanders said, “Some are trying to rewrite history by saying they voted for one anti-gay law to stop something worse. That is not the case.” Sanders also invoked Clinton’s past comments about the Trans-Pacific Partnership being the "gold standard” of trade agreements, as well as repeatedly emphasizing that he will lead on principle, not polls.
