$21 Trillion in Off-books Spending Padded the US "Defense" Budget

Remember when Rumsfeld announced on Sept 10 2001 that $2.3T had been lost by DoD?  A Michigan State U economist, working with graduate students and a former government official, has found $21 trillion in unauthorized spending in the departments of Defense and Housing and Urban Development for the years 1998-2015. This is more than three times the authorized budgets during those years.  It appears that the bloated Defense budget that we hear about - almost as large as all the rest of the world's countries put together - is less than 1/4 of what the US military monster has really cost.  And this is the current cost in dollars, not the cost in lives, or the social cost of disabled veterans, or the future medical costs, or the cost of America's reputation as a bully around the world.  Last week DoD announced its first ever audit.
