That last issue-- getting view counts for past articles was an iffy situation. The database appeared to be lost and we had to use special efforts and techniques, at considerable expense to recover them. Fortunately, our new server people are brilliant and they did it.
Hardware:
We have brand new hardware that is better and faster
We now have a RAID backups system using two SSD hard drives and an external backup provided by our server management company. We've moved from 32 to 64 GB of RAM and have a faster processor. This configuratlon will provide much more security from crashes.
Now the bad news:
We were down, off the internet for over a day, and then the site kept crashing so people couldn't log in. So we had veyr little content for several days. Even I couldn't log in for a long time. And then the newsletter functions were down. We're all about content, so this was devastating.
Then, there was the cost. It took a lot of programmer time to do the transfer and recovery-- first from the dead hard drive and then to the new server.
We're finally getting back on track. Articles and quicklinks are coming it. But this is the most devastating, catastrophic thing to ever happen to OEN in its 15.5 years of existence.
This is really urgent
Now We have to pay for it
This catastrophic crash, the site being down and the recovery have been devastating to our donations and ad revenues. Programming costs for dealing with the problems have added to the weight of our problems. Shifting to the new server is the necessary move and a positive one but it is also going to add to cost.
