Looking at your Presidency in the most favorable light, you are a man who will not change your mind. Critics call you stubborn; you see yourself as steadfast. When others have begged you to change course on the Iraq War, the most controversial initiative of your Presidency, you have scolded them and suggested they advocated surrender. You have predicted that any Democratic administration will withdraw, giving Al Queda a victory in the ensuing chaos, and thereby endangering the United States.
You have asked our military to stay the course far beyond what they contracted to do when they volunteered, even to the point of sacrificing their readiness. You shopped the military high command for handpicked generals who are willing to go beyond sacrifice into ideology for their Commander-in-Chief. To everyone in your own party you have said, if you love America, "Stay the course. Don't cut and run!"
I know you must be in a quandary (dilemma), er, I mean you must be having a tough time making a decision about what to do about Iraq, and for that matter, Iran, before you leave office.
Some pundits have suggested you want to "run out the clock" on Iraq, thereby passing the problem on to your successor, presumably the winner of the 2008 Presidential Election. I have seen championship sports teams run out the clock in the final game to WIN. To my knowledge, it is unprecedented to run out the clock while losing. I only say we're losing because nobody except you appears to know what "victory" means.
Running out the clock and passing the buck (more like a hot potato) to weaker leaders than yourself? This just doesn't sound like you. You wouldn't ask our men and women to give life and limb and often their futures while you yourself "cut and run" back to Crawford, would you?
You wouldn't ask them to over-extend and re-extend beyond endurance, so that VA Confirms 18 Vets Commit Suicide Every Day; record numbers are coming home and taking their own lives, probably rather than going back yet again, while you have a fire sale in D.C. and run with the money?
You won't abandon your promise to Iraq and the world that you will stay the course, will you? I can't see a Christian man of your integrity changing his motto from "Stay the course" to "Run out the clock" and in your own stated opinion, turning your loyal military over to a less patriotic President to do with as he or she will, including "surrendering."
You must have considered that another "9/11" type attack, or perhaps going to war with Iran, or even the ongoing financial catastrophe (Too big a word? Try clusterf__k.)...
see The US Economy And The Costs Of War.
...will serve as a plausible reason to declare martial law and suspend the '08 election, until "order and security can be restored."
That would give you some extra time to really win in Iraq and Iran, and who knows how long we would need private security contractors around to help local law enforcement root out "terrorists" among us? How long before we could have "safe" elections?
Unless you want your legacy to be ruined, you have to abandon this plan to run out the clock in January, '09. Any of the events in the preceding paragraph would guarantee a martial law takeover with no resistance. You could show the world that you don't run out on a problem. If your intelligence is believable, you have been told there will be no real domestic resistance, (unlike in Iraq) as most Americans just have the vacuous expression of mental patients on a picnic.
The media will take care of the masses. They will go to "Reality TV 24/7", and we can watch ourselves get thrown off the planet. Of course, that show will be rigged just like the ones we already have.
My recommendation is to go ahead with your plans, but don't declare martial law until you "have to" to preserve the Union, almost like Lincoln, right? Not the car, the man. Sheesh.
Mr. Unitary Chief, where's your sense of entitlement? Omnipotence? Would God's warrior leave the field of battle before the day is won?
On the other hand, maybe it is right for you to run out the clock and bail on the mess you've created, because if you decide to declare martial law and stay in the White House, it might just provide the shock needed to awaken the sleeping giant you fear so much--How do you think the American people will respond?
Will they quote you and say, "BRING IT ON!"
OR will they go with Dick Cheney's "GO F—K YOURSELF!"?
I have a feeling most people would choose dick's words, but I say 'bring it on'.
WHY?
Don't Look Now, But The Terrorists Have Won will explain it so you can understand it. You have increased terrorists' recruiting and unified our enemies. Anybody who has been conscious for the last eight years knows we have already lost America. We meaning we the people. Many don't know it yet. Odds are even that they never will.
But if you do what you want to do, just as you have done all along, why not go ahead? I know you can bomb Iran and get by with it; the big challenge for you will be to use it to stay on as Commander-in-Chief, which requires martial law and suspension of elections. You probably feel history will vindicate you, because you own history.
I'll be honest, my reasons for hoping you will do so are selfish: I think if you plan to stay in office after Jan.'09, there is a good chance that Americans will
Wake Up
to reality and end your pathetic legacy.
