Doug Thompson published his first story and photo at age 11 -- a newspaper article about racism and the Klan in Prince Edward County, VA, in 1958. From that point on, he decided to become a newspaperman and did just that -- reporting news and taking photos full-time at his hometown paper, becoming the youngest full-time reporter at The Roanoke Times in Virginia in 1965 and spent most of the past 55+ years covering news around the country and the globe. He spent a short sabbatical as a political operative in Washington in the 1980s but returned to the news profession in 1992. Today, he is a contract reporter/photojournalist for BHMedia and owns Capitol Hill Blue and other news sites.
SHARE Sunday, July 8, 2018 Donald Trump: Racist, bigot, hater and crook
"When you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas," claims an old saying. Those who endorse and support Trump should be scratching until their skin bleeds. Donald Trump is a racist, a bigot, a hater and a corrupt man who is looting America to serve his personal greed and massive ego.

Most of those who hold public office are drunk with the intoxication of power. Republicans, we are learning more and more, are led by a Speaker of the House who is not only drunk from power but also, based on his actions and the smell that accompanies him, is blasted from the effects of too much booze.

While I agree that America as a nation is in trouble and most likely headed for even more problems, I cannot subscribe to the theory that the end is near. We've been down before. We've faced crisis and even the threat of oblivion before but this nation is a collection of stubborn types who refuse to give up and who, somehow, find a way to survive.

SHARE Wednesday, December 6, 2006 Iraq Study Group Report: Smoke, mirrors and the fog of war
According to all that collected brain power in the Iraq Study Group, conditions in President George W. Bush's failed Iraq war are "grave and deteriorating" and the United States must find a way to get the hell out. This is news? Hell, the American public has known this for months. That's why they sent the Republican-controlled Congress packing in the November midterm elections. That's why Bush's public approval ratings are so
(9 comments) SHARE Sunday, April 7, 2019 Donald Trump is a murderer
Trump's actions result in unnecessary and needless deaths throughout America. Thousands of U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico died because Trump intentionally delayed needed rescue efforts during disasters. Thousands have been slaughtered by the heinous white supremacists Trump emboldened by his unwillingness to condemn their actions and called them, as Krugman noted, "very fine people."

Some people who have real money have been whispering for months that Trump is nowhere as rich as he claims and is debt up to his ass, paying overdue bills with money raised in fraudulent schemes like "Trump University" and by turning a run for President into an endless "infomercial" to hawk his "brand" by even using campaign press conferences to promote his wine, his steaks, water and even playing cards.

The Tea Party is not -- and never has been -- the "grassroots" movement that is claims. Vandals spray painted "Trump nation. Whites only" on an Episcopal church in Maryland. In central Indiana, an anti-gay slur and "HEIL TRUMP" were spray painted on an Episcopal Church. The increase in such incidents shows too much anger, intolerance, hate, bigotry and racism still exists in America.
It certainly does in Donald Trump's America.

The current system is not working. Congress is mired in partisan gridlock. The current President turned out to just be more of the same. Despite promises and claims, the economy is not really recovering. Cities, towns and counties file for bankruptcy, future leaders are assessed more for their celebrity appeal than any actual experience or ability.
(2 comments) SHARE Saturday, October 19, 2013 Lots of people lost but did anyone win in the government shutdown?
Did the tea party learn its lesson in the debacle that technically ended last night with votes in the Senate and House? Based on public statements by the hard-core TP types who genuflect to falsely-claimed values, the answer is "no way" and the group has shown little ability to learn from its many past mistakes. But when all is said and done, the biggest loser was America itself and those who call this nation home.
(2 comments) SHARE Friday, October 25, 2013 Yes, I worked for Republicans but, thankfully, I never became one
I cannot, and will not, ever consider my time as a GOP political operative a career highlight or something for which to be proud. What I learned about the political process in more than a dozen years serves me well as a journalist. It taught me that political corruption is not limited to a single political party and that no party or political organization puts America ahead of its own interests or selfish agendas.

As President, Obama is not a leader and has lost much of his celebrity luster. Partisanship is bi-partisan in Washington. Both parties live under its banner and genuflect to whatever phony ideals either side claims to stand for. While both claim to stand for what they claim is best for America what they really embrace is absolute power and complete control of a government that once functioned far more efficiently under moderation, cooperation and coalitions.

The odds are strong that Liz Cheney won't even make it past the primary. The Republican leadership is already lining up behind incumbent GOP Senator Mike Enzi. Wyoming voters traditionally don't oust incumbents and Cheney, who was born in Wisconsin, lived in Virginia until she and her husband bought a big bucks home in trendy Jackson Hole last year.

While leaders on both sides of the aisle in the House and Senate attempt, and often fail, to be courteous to each other in public, the acrimony they feel towards their counterparts is becoming more and more obvious and concerns staff members. Boehner and McConnell have nothing to do with their Democratic counterparts and Reid and Pelosi are content to avid social contact with Republicans.

In the end, longtime Republican Senator Arlen Specter had no choice.
If he wanted to keep his Senate seat, he had to return to the Democratic Party he left early in his political career. If he wanted to keep his sanity he had to get away from the rabid right wing that controls the Republican Party.

You can draw many analogies out of what Bush said in his disjointed, rambling speech to the nation but a reasonable person can come to only one conclusion: The President of the United States has run out of excuses, options or rationalizations for a failed, ill-conceived, illegal and immoral action that will go down in history as a massive political and military debacle.

SHARE Monday, November 27, 2006 Iraq war first-hand: 'A mess. An absolute mess'
The dwindling few who still, for reasons known only to God or their psychiatrist, support Bush's failed invasion if Iraq, continue to claim the situation is not as bad as portrayed by the media. Which, of course, is nothing more than political wishful thinking. Just ask CNN correspondent John Roberts, who went into Baghdad with the invading U.S. forces 3 1/2 years ago and recently returned to the war-ravaged country...
