Israel's "Human Shield" Hypocrisy The "human shields" argument is what allows Israeli officials, to deliberately and systematically bomb the family homes of suspected militants, killing whole families. It suggests an ethic that supposedly justifies an Israeli offensive which produces 75-80% civilian causalities, 33% of which are children, among the Palestinian population.

Charge of the Right Brigade: Ukraine and the Dynamics of Capitalist Insurrection It’s quite amusing, until it gets sickening, to watch American leaders--who cling to the notion that a thin, corrupt, disempowering electoral process legitimizes them--embrace the forceful overthrow of a democratically elected leader in a functioning parliamentary democracy while insisting they are doing no such thing.

Edward Snowden, Lawrence O'Donnell, and the Failure of Fuzzy Land Thinking Lawrence O'Donnell's failure confirmed how difficult it is going to be for conservative or liberal pundits to dismiss Snowden's actions on the basis of his personality, and it was a scene that ended up discrediting nothing more than the whole media theater of derogation itself.

The New Privateers: Civil Forfeiture, Police Piracy, and the Third-Worldization of America You won't believe it. It's about the laws and practices -- developed over the last 15-20 years as part of the "war on drugs" and the general encroachment of police-state tactics -- regarding what is called "civil forfeiture." "Good al-Qaeda's" Air Force: The United States Is At War With Syria The United States just went to war with Syria. With the confirmation today that American planes will shoot down Syrian planes attacking USDA-approved "rebels," the United States is now overtly engaged in another criminal attack on a sovereign country that poses no conceivable, let alone actual or imminent, threat to the nation. This is an act of war.

Defeat or Impeach? The (Il)Logic of Impeachment First, we had Prime Directive A: The Absolute Most Important Thing Ever In The History Of The Universe (or at least The American Republic) Is To Defeat Trump in 2020. Now, there's Prime Directive B: We Must Impeach Trump, even if doing so helps to re-elect him! There's an absolute contradiction in these positions that has to be recognized. There cannot be two "most important" things.

As Syria Devolves, Israel Rampages The Israeli attack on Syria last week confirms that the US has assured Israel in advance that, whatever transpires from the US-backed rebellion, Israel will get the net benefit of a weakened Syrian state, open to at-will Israeli incursion.

Zionism In The Light of Jerusalem Donald Trump's official recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is an embarrassment. A salutary embarrassment. It's a clumsy, all-too-obvious unmasking of decades of bipartisan U.S. policy whose contempt for Palestinians has been cloaked with a smile and a handshake.

America, ISIS, and Syria: We have to bomb the jihadis in order to save them ISIS is the product of years of American military intervention in Iraq, Libya, and Syria. American military intervention will not solve the jihad problem. It will make it worse. American and its major allies in the region know this, and are OK with it. They prefer ISIS and jihadism to stable, coherent states that can resist their hegemony.

The Road to Syria: "It all depends on what America says" It's really quite depressing to watch the utter destruction of another Arab state unfold, framed once again as some kind of project for humanitarianism and/or democracy. It's depressing to know that it will engender chaos and violence throughout the region, that it is only the prelude to an even more epic criminal adventure in Iran, and that there is probably nothing that is going to stop it.

Dipsy Doodle: What "Globalization" Has Wrought Globalization's big losers are the sectors of the world's population that had decent incomes, a few notches above average -- the kind of income that allowed for homes and vacations, but not limousines and villas. It's not hard to figure who they are; they're the people on the streets in Athens, Madrid, and Paris, in the state capitol in Wisconsin, and those losing their pensions in Detroit.

Syria: No Better Angels Things have changed, in a good direction. But Let's not get carried away with optimism, however. If we have to recognize that there has been real political movement, we must also recognize the enormous political, ideological, and financial forces still committed to this war, and how far we are from winning this fight against them. The balance of power is still very much against the antiwar camp.

It's Not Unusual: The Left-Right (S)Mashup in American Politics The leadership of both parties, along with the corporate and media elite, is trying desperately to maintain for the public a coherent story, with all the characters fixed in their proper roles, and the conflict structured in terms that they control. In fact, it's becoming harder to ignore that there are deep and enduring alliances between both parties, and serious and growing fractures within each of them.

This piece deconstructs the twin pillars of diversion for liberals--"the indictment is for hacking not publishing" (favorite of NYT & WaPo) and "the important thing is to extradite him to Sweden for sex charges" (current favorite in UK).

Payroll Taxes Are the Achilles Heel of Social Security For whatever opportunistic reasons and however fragmentarily, they have opened the door for questioning the "payroll tax/trust fund" structure, which is actually a weak and failing line of defense for SS&M that must be abandoned. The better response of the left is not to reflexively reject what they are saying, but to say "You're right. The tax isn't necessary," and take the discussion in a much more productive direction.

Bernie's End Sure, Bernie should fight through the convention, but only if that means mounting floor protests, coordinated with protests in the street, demanding public promises from the nominee and the full convention on a number of key issues. That threat--Affirm the party's progressive stance on x, y, and z, publicly and irrevocably, or we walk out!--is the only power Bernie and his supporters have in the Democratic convention.
