Joan Brunwasser is a co-founder of Citizens for Election Reform (CER) which since 2005 existed for the sole purpose of raising the public awareness of the critical need for election reform. Our goal: to restore fair, accurate, transparent, secure elections where votes are cast in private and counted in public. Because the problems with electronic (computerized) voting systems include a lack of transparency and the ability to accurately check and authenticate the vote cast, these systems can alter election results and therefore are simply antithetical to democratic principles and functioning.

Since the pivotal 2004 Presidential election, Joan has come to see the connection between a broken election system, a dysfunctional, corporate media and a total lack of campaign finance reform. This has led her to enlarge the parameters of her writing to include interviews with whistle-blowers and articulate others who give a view quite different from that presented by the mainstream media. She also turns the spotlight on activists and ordinary folks who are striving to make a difference, to clean up and improve their corner of the world. By focusing on these intrepid individuals, she gives hope and inspiration to those who might otherwise be turned off and alienated. She also interviews people in the arts in all their variations - authors, journalists, filmmakers, actors, playwrights, and artists. Why? The bottom line: without art and inspiration, we lose one of the best parts of ourselves. And we're all in this together. If Joan can keep even one of her fellow citizens going another day, she considers her job well done.

When Joan hit one million page views, OEN Managing Editor, Meryl Ann Butler interviewed her, turning interviewer briefly into interviewee. Read the interview here.

While the news is often quite depressing, Joan nevertheless strives to maintain her mantra: "Grab life now in an exuberant embrace!"

Joan has been Election Integrity Editor for OpEdNews since December, 2005. Her articles also appear at Huffington Post, RepublicMedia.TV and Scoop.co.nz.

The Audacity of Nope: Clinton's Nix on Transparency For many years we Dems have been saying that the Clintons are unfairly hunted by the Right that we have failed to question whether either of them is very regularly wise in their personal dealings or handling of public scrutiny. I know Mr. Clinton is not, and I have come to conclude Mrs. Clinton is not either-which is especially worrying considering that she and her husband employ a massive team of handlers whose very job it is

Discussing American Ennui with Clinical Psychologist Bruce Levine I wish the answer to restoring democracy was simply one of people getting more journalistic truths through a non-corporate media.I think that much more is required. We need to take a look at what forces in American society are breaking the American people from the ability to resist tyranny& dehumanization,we must start considering what are the antidotes. That's what anyone who gives a damn about genuine democracy should be doing

Argonne Lab's Head of Vulnerability Assessment Team Disses Election Security If we can have about 15 seconds of access to most security devices (and presumably most voting machines),we can hijack them. This can occur at the factory, in transit, on the loading dock, in storage, while sitting around in the school hallways, etc. Thus, a cradle to grave, secure chain of custody is vital for any security device or voting machine.A chain of custody is a process, not a piece of paper bureaucrats scribble on.

Bureau of Prisons "Disappears" Federal Prisoner Just In Time for His Birthday When I was visiting Gary in prison, another prisoner locked his eyes with mine and said, "Between a year and a half and two years." I waited. "That's when family and friends stop visiting." Thinking of our own reality and that of so many others I had met, I asked, "Because they run out of money?" "Because they run out of love." That's what prisoners fear most - that those they love will run out of love.

Omega Institute's Elizabeth Lesser on "Broken Open" and Personal Transformation The hardest aspect of memoir is that it involves writing about not only oneself, but also about the people in one's life. My children, my parents, my husband, my ex-husband, my friends: none of them asked to be characters in my book. I am sure I caused discomfort for some of the folks in my life. But I did it for a reason that I still feel clear and good about.

Diablo Canyon Nuclear Reactor on FIVE Earthquake Fault Lines! How Can We Shut It Down? Pick your local nuke and shut it down. There's no substitute for personal involvement with a local polluter. That includes fracking and all forms of pollution. Go to the source and show your face in person. It's a hundred times more effective than what we can do online.t's a two-pronged deal---fight the dirty King CONG corporations around the corner, where they can see you, and make your own little Solartopia at home.

What WikiLeaks Reveal about Corporatism Dominating American Foreign Policy Time after time, US diplomats consult with the executives of some of the largest corporations to determine how to deal with conflicts in other countries. These cables also demonstrate how our government views any threat to corporate America as a threat to the US, which is absurd. The mainstream media has been ignoring the most significant revelations exposed by these cables, which is why it's essential to write about them.

This Librarian Is Smashing Stereotypes, One Tattoo at a Time Especially if it's a custom design, the artist is going to have a great deal of input so you want to work together to come up with something that everyone is jazzed about. I do have tattoos that already existed as images but you still want to get advice from the artist about how to best interpret those images on skin. Good shops and artists will work with you to make sure everyone is happy with the result.

Czech Filmmaker Lukas Pribyl on His Holocaust Documentary, "Forgotten Transports" I did not do the films because of some need for personal closure, I did it because of pure fascination with the people I met. The true stories I capture in Forgotten Transports are the quintessential stories of human survival, will to survive, hope and life. That's actually what I am interested in -" how people can laugh, love, hope and live despite being surrounded by complete horror.

Dr. Sam Miklus, Mastermind Behind Odyssey of the Mind Why should we have a be teacher telling a kid how to build a balsa wood structure when the kid could build one that would be far superior to the teacher's?The teachers play a role in this. For example,if we're having a problem with Greek mythology, the teacher can be the motivator behind the thing rather than the fact person. It's a different way of learning, there's no question about it.Creativity is the essence of human beings.

Talking with Itamar Marcus of Palestinian Media Watch For 14 years, we have been reading the daily Palestinian newspapers, watching Palestinian Authority official TV and studying their schoolbooks. Our goal is to get an accurate picture of the internal Arabic language Palestinian world and especially what Palestinian leadership is saying to their children. We feel that if there is to be peace, it has to start with children and has to be founded on peace education.

Five-Hour Wait in the Rain, But Bernie Was Worth It! What made me pay attention to politics was having a daughter, the hatred Trump was spreading and police brutality. What would America be like for my daughter with a president like Trump? Will my husband survive a routine traffic stop these days? I was looking for a candidate that was going to bring our country back t ogether and that's what I saw in Bernie, a genuine, honest person who was bringing every kind of race together.

Freeing Ourselves From Emotional Eating It's not the thing we think we want that we want -- whether it's a thin body, success at work, a loving relationship or riches -- it's how we believe that having that will affect us. The Big Lie is that things we can touch, see or have make us happy, but that never happens, not once. We keep ourselves entranced about this so that we can keep wanting and keep believing that someday, we will finally relax, be content.

Times Square Rabbi Helps America's Runaway Kids Almost no kids I met made it. AIDS, murder, suicide, overdoses and just disappearing were and still are the end game. I went because I cannot stand knowing kids can grow up, die young and never have anyone love them, give them hope, or listen to their short-lived dreams. Then, they die alone. These kids deserve someone who cares. Someone has to be out there. In my own small world, that someone is me.

Diane Wilson, Accidental Activist and Eco-Outlaw This wasn't only an environmental fight. it was a gender and class fight.Going the regular route - working inside 'the box' was not going to work on the Texas Gulf Coast. If I acted like a well-behaved little citizen, asking permission and speaking nicely to my elected officials and playing the regular game in town, my bays and the fish and the dolphins and the shrimp and the pelicans and the fishermen were gonna get creamed.

Election Analyst Delves into Bernie's "Electability" Based upon actual data rather than mere opinion, it is shown that Bernie Sanders can win the White House. Primary results and polling data from 2016 and 2020 show Bernie defeating Donald Trump then and now. Bernie would carry the "Blue Wall" lost by Hillary Clinton, and he has proven strength in rural counties all across the nation. A Sanders victory depends upon a unified Democratic party, and a free and fair election.

Following Up with Steve Heller, formerly known as the "Diebold Whistle-blower" I recently had the opportunity to catch up with election integrity hero, Steve Heller. Our last interview was back in August, 2007. Join me for this candid, exclusive conversation in which Steve muses about how his life has changed since 2004, and how he feels about that.

Reflections of Veteran Chicago Newspaperman, John Blades I was a poor student even in English class, where a C was a mighty achievement for me.But I was always a compulsive reader, having learned to read before I went to kindergarten.I consider it a blessing that we (my family and my friends' families) didn't have TV sets, otherwise we would've spent all our down time watching junky TV shows, rather than reading junky books. The addiction to reading proved useful in my mature years.

At 74, Welding Latest Passion for Versatile Artist, Dede Harris Art is all about problem solving, whether it is balance, position, color, etc. Even empty spaces create a challenge. All areas have to be judged singularly and as a whole, a constant shift from the particular to the entire. I get an unsettled feeling, a visceral unease, when things aren't just right. Then I feel a sudden relief when the problem has been solved.
