Joan Brunwasser is a co-founder of Citizens for Election Reform (CER) which since 2005 existed for the sole purpose of raising the public awareness of the critical need for election reform. Our goal: to restore fair, accurate, transparent, secure elections where votes are cast in private and counted in public. Because the problems with electronic (computerized) voting systems include a lack of transparency and the ability to accurately check and authenticate the vote cast, these systems can alter election results and therefore are simply antithetical to democratic principles and functioning.

Since the pivotal 2004 Presidential election, Joan has come to see the connection between a broken election system, a dysfunctional, corporate media and a total lack of campaign finance reform. This has led her to enlarge the parameters of her writing to include interviews with whistle-blowers and articulate others who give a view quite different from that presented by the mainstream media. She also turns the spotlight on activists and ordinary folks who are striving to make a difference, to clean up and improve their corner of the world. By focusing on these intrepid individuals, she gives hope and inspiration to those who might otherwise be turned off and alienated. She also interviews people in the arts in all their variations - authors, journalists, filmmakers, actors, playwrights, and artists. Why? The bottom line: without art and inspiration, we lose one of the best parts of ourselves. And we're all in this together. If Joan can keep even one of her fellow citizens going another day, she considers her job well done.

When Joan hit one million page views, OEN Managing Editor, Meryl Ann Butler interviewed her, turning interviewer briefly into interviewee. Read the interview here.

While the news is often quite depressing, Joan nevertheless strives to maintain her mantra: "Grab life now in an exuberant embrace!"

Joan has been Election Integrity Editor for OpEdNews since December, 2005. Her articles also appear at Huffington Post, RepublicMedia.TV and Scoop.co.nz.

Russ Baker: Bernie's Strength of Character Has HURT His Campaign I found that Clinton backers were not really differentiating between the candidates on their personal nature, their very real decisions and philosophical cores, their historical allies and funders...But the point the Times made, albeit very buried, was that Sanders had failed to seize on some key opportunities to damage Clinton and stand further apart from her, though he could have -- because of his own essential decency.

Devil in the Details: Poll Results Clinton Does NOT Want You to See The more interesting aspect of that poll was how unpopular it showed Clinton to be. This is the other facet of the secret hiding in full sight -- not only does she not poll as well as Sanders against the Republicans, but people flat out don't like her. And we see this nationwide. So we have to congratulate the Clinton people for maintaining the widely-held perception that this unloved candidate is the best option the Dems have.

The Audacity of Nope: Clinton's Nix on Transparency For many years we Dems have been saying that the Clintons are unfairly hunted by the Right that we have failed to question whether either of them is very regularly wise in their personal dealings or handling of public scrutiny. I know Mr. Clinton is not, and I have come to conclude Mrs. Clinton is not either-which is especially worrying considering that she and her husband employ a massive team of handlers whose very job it is

Hillary's Time-Bomb: Wars, Lies, and Secrets Hillary has skillfully marketed herself, with help from her friends. I have noted elsewhere that she is not a presidential candidate because of her experience. Rather her experience was designed to make her a presidential candidate. A CV with Senator from New York and Secretary of State looks unbeatable. But the record is actually disastrous.

Peter B. Collins: The Swiftboating of Bernie I've interviewed him many times, including the hour-long "Brunch with Bernie" when I subbed for Thom Hartmann on his radio show. He's smart and tenacious, and can weather the attacks.I just saw a series of really nasty tweets aimed at Jane Sanders that are, well, crude and revolting. But I think they can handle it.[He] needs to release his full tax returns, and to sharpen his foreign policy positions and not yield that to HRC.

Economist Dean Baker Dissects Bernie's NY Daily News Interview Since someone just sent me the transcript of the Clinton interview, let me take the opportunity to make a contrast. Clinton['s response] is complete and total nonsense...If the media treated Clinton in the same way as Sanders, she would be a national laughing stock for this answer. But in all probability no one will pay attention. Anyhow, you can blame Sanders for not recognizing that he would be held to a much higher standard

Is There a President Paul Ryan on the Horizon? We have to face the reality that both Hillary and Bernie face serious obstacles to the presidency. Many of their supporters have been assuming a cakewalk against Donald Trump. But if he goes into the GOP convention without a clear majority there's a strong reality that the nominee could be Paul Ryan. I'm not sure either Bernie or Hillary could beat him in a rigged election.

Economist Robert Pollin: Bernie Will Create Green New Deal I am convinced that Sanders has a credible approach for advancing a Green New Deal and has the commitment to fight for it. He will also have a massive political movement behind him that he has ignited. The total history of both Bill and Hillary Clinton is to cozy up to big business and do their bidding, while throwing out concessions to everyone else, as needed, to advance their own political careers.

Feds vs. Apple: What's Really Going On Here? Let's not kid ourselves: Apple is doing this because their business model depends on people being able to trust the security of their smart phones. They're not doing this just to be a good citizen! But on this, Apple is on the right side, yes, and Apple does make more effort to make their devices secure than some other companies. People can best think of this in terms of what thieves could get if they stole your smart phone...

Brussels-Based Journalist on Belgian Terror Attacks Belgian newspapers carry the story [today] that the government has not met all the demands of the airport police regarding tighter control of all access to Zaventem and the police refuse to go back to work. Bravo for their actions. The latest poll released today shows that the population here is as confused on the nature of the terrorist threat we face as are people in the USA or otherwise at a great distance from Belgium.

Abramson Claims: "Sanders is Winning;" Could He Be Right? The Sanders campaign is right now marshaling hard data for their summer pitch to super-delegates. They can already claim that they out-perform Clinton among independents; in national polling vs Trump; in battleground-state polling vs Trump; among working-class men; and among millennials. This article adds to these powerful arguments: that in battleground states, Bernie Sanders more often wins the Election Day vote.

Coleen Rowley: "HRC is a Neocon" I urge readers to check out HillaryIsANeocon.com. There's a reason that the founder of PNAC, Robert Kagan and other neocon warhawks are now backing (and advising) Clinton over the other presidential candidates and it's not because she's a "true progressive" or a realist. Just the opposite. They know they can depend upon her to continue to wage wars and support "regime changes" around the world based on her solid track record.

The Agenda Project Action Fund Feels the Bern We think of ourselves as part of a broader progressive community and that our voice is an amplification of that community. We decided the best route was to pursue direct democracy and allow our supporters to weigh in. As votes began pouring in, the results were staggering. Bernie Sanders ended up garnering 97% of the public vote, a rather astounding mandate from our followers. The path forward was clear: join the revolution.

Hope or Hustle in the Primaries - An Interview with Michael Collins To paraphrase the Bible, we shall know her by her works. Hillary Clinton is a dangerous leader. If elected president, she has the potential to ruin much more than two countries.... Sanders is not a bought-and-sold politician. He has a philosophy and worldview that favors the vast majority of people. Therefore, the people who fund the Democrats and Republicans get nervous when they see someone doing well who isn't for sale.

Bob Koehler, Peace Journalist, Feels the Bern I do believe that profound changes are coming, a la the '60s and maybe even bigger. I truly hope the movement connected to Bernie's candidacy will stay alive whether he wins or loses. Democracy is about participation in the future. Let's not quit on this or leave it to the "experts" and the special interests. Let's not just rebuild but transform this society into one that has the Golden Rule at its core. Go Bernie! Peace!

What Does the FOX Say? How My Dad Was Brainwashed "The Brainwashing of My Dad" is a story about both the transformation of my father after his discovery of right-wing media, and the history and tricks of the trade behind that media. I look at how the media changed over the last 30-40 years through the lens of my father. It's no accident that it became as right leaning as it did. It's also no accident that simultaneously the country became so divided.

Five-Hour Wait in the Rain, But Bernie Was Worth It! What made me pay attention to politics was having a daughter, the hatred Trump was spreading and police brutality. What would America be like for my daughter with a president like Trump? Will my husband survive a routine traffic stop these days? I was looking for a candidate that was going to bring our country back t ogether and that's what I saw in Bernie, a genuine, honest person who was bringing every kind of race together.

Understanding Bernie's "Yuge" Michigan Upset The coalition that successfully elected Pres. Obama to the White House twice is being tested in 2016.It was successful because so many white voters, led by the young, got behind his candidacy in unity with African Americans, Latinos. This time a successful strategy will require all to coalesce behindSanders if the Democrats hope to win in the fall. Hillary Clinton, with her compromised stand on free trade agreements won't cut it

"Aged to Perfection" Tackles Challenges for Seniors So many times we think we're helping elderly people by doing everything for them, making their lives "comfortable", when what they want is a sense of purpose, or at least something to do. I found that happen in my own life... I think that being idle, which sounds wonderful when you're too busy, gets boring quite quickly. And--I don't have any evidence of this!--but I think it ages you.

Robert Reich: Clinton Can't Achieve Magnitude of Change Needed; Sanders Can Incrementalism no longer works. Income, wealth, and political power continue to concentrate at the top -- and reinforce each other. This can't be reversed unless a large # of Americans demand it to be -- which requires bold ideas, a strong political movement, and tenacity. The practical choice isn't small adjustments vs. big change [but] whether they come through the democratic process or through authoritarian populism [Trump]
