For today I begin a trip from the Midwest to Westfield, New Jersey. I begin a journey because I have been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to serve The Nation magazine as an intern in New York during the spring of this year.

2010 Comes to an End But the BP Oil Disaster Continues As 2010 comes to an end, one of the most horrific disasters of the year--the explosion of BP's Deepwater Horizon oilrig, which blew up and killed 11 workers and injured 17 others--continues to bring devastating impacts to residents living in and around the Gulf. Suspicions run high. Residents suspect Corexit continues to be sprayed to disperse oil under cover of the night. Conspiracy theories on oil leaking spread too.

Indefinite Detention of Guantanamo Detainees to Become a Long-Term U.S. Policy The Obama Administration will be making indefinite detention a more institutionalized part of U.S. policy in the so-called war on terrorism. An executive order to set up a "parole board" to periodically "review evidence" against "prisoners" being held at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba is being discussed and is expected to be signed by Obama next year.

Veteran-led Civil Resistance in Front of White House and WikiLeaks' Role in Inspiring the Action This morning, on December 16th, military veterans will lead a nonviolent act of civil resistance against the ongoing U.S. wars and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. Led by Veterans for Peace, the organizers expect this to be the largest veteran-led resistance since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began.
