Is Trump a Populist or an Emperor? There is an important debate about whether Trump recycles older populist politics, or whether something about him is decidedly new. In a Newsweek op-ed, Rafael Holmberg argued that Trump moves beyond populism, because he inverts the relation between demands and solutions that populism was characterised by. I challenge this assertion, and suggest that Trump is something like an emperor who embraces his contradictions.
