David Summergrad, born in Harlem and raised in Glen Cove, New York, considers himself a lifelong warrior for social justice.

He is a long time school principal, teacher, and curriculum developer, and he has been a consulting administrator in several school districts in Massachusetts. For 10 years David was the Director of the Office of Teaching and Learning at EXPLO at Wellesley. In addition, David is a lecturer in the Graduate School of Education at Curry College. David served on the Needham School Committee for 6 years. Prior to becoming a principal, David was the English Department Chair and Martin Luther King Houseleader at Wayland Middle School. David was a recipient of the “Outstanding Contribution Award” from Wayland METCO. He received Wayland's Mary L. Johnson Travelship Award in 1993, and he was honored as the recipient of the Goldin Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award in 1995. He has run the New York City marathon 23 times as a fundraiser, and to date he has raised over $75,000 for various charities. David has helped to organize Needham's Annual Diversity Summit since its first year in 2012. He founded College Bound at Needham High School, working with a group of volunteers to help students of color and their families navigate the college application process. David was the author of three books of writing lessons using the Writers’ Express Method, (WEX) and he has published several articles about education and parenting.

On Racism and Privilege I have been hesitant to jump in to this important conversation, one that is so fraught with passion and strong emotions. The idea of putting my thoughts in writing is, frankly, a little intimidating.
