My name is Jesselyn Radack and I am the former Justice Department ethics attorney and whistleblower in the case of "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh. In today's issue of The National Law Journal (Feb. 19, 2007), I have an Op-Ed entitled "Targeting Lawyers" on what it really looks like when the government tries to control attorneys acting on behalf of terrorism suspects and, if it cannot control them, punish them. I speak from personal experience in being blacklisted by this Administration.

Charging Wikileaks Source: The Nail in the Coffin of Whistblowers I don't care if it's Bush or Obama at the helm. The biggest crimes of our generation--torture, warrantless wiretapping, and extraordinary rendition--would not have come to light but for the unauthorized disclosure of classified information. For the hand-wringing "but we can't willy-nilly reveal classified information" crowd, do you think Abu Ghraib wasn't classified?

DHS Spies on Maryland Peace Activists: It's Worse Than We Thought Today's WaPo has an article opaquely titled "Federal Agency Aided Md. Spying" it's worse than originally reported. Initial reports were that Maryland police classified nonviolent activists as terrorists and entered their names into state and federal terrorist watch lists for opposing the death penalty and Iraq war. But it's the other way around: DHS spied on peaceful protest groups and gave the information to state police.

Wash. Post Profile: Thomas Drake (An NSA Whistleblower We Would Have Cheered During the Bush Years) Drake is guilty of defending the Constitution against the ravages of the Bush administration. I think he's a hero. If you agree, please contact Attorney General Holder

McCarthyism on Steroids: Monitoring Americans The federal government, under the phony auspices of anti-terrorism, is vacuuming up untold quantities of data on citizens in this country. All in the name of keeping us "safe". George Orwell's prophetic anti-vision has arrived.

Justice Department Leakers of Classified Info. Get a Pass Three months ago, journalist Michael Isikoff noted the disturbing "Double Standard" in White House Leak Inquiries. But now it's not just the Executive Branch. Josh Gerstein of Politico just published an article on how a judge ruled that the Justice Department can keep secret names of its own lawyers who leak classified information.

The Truth About Espionage Act Prosecution Against Whistleblower John Kiriakou It's outrageous that John Kiriakou, a whistleblower, is the ONLY INDIVIDUAL TO BE PROSECUTED IN RELATION TO THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S TORTURE PROGRAM . The interrogators who tortured prisoners, the officials who gave the orders, the attorneys who authored the torture memos, and the CIA agents who destroyed the interrogation tapes have not been held professionally accountable, much less charged with crimes.

Kafka: Gov't Tries Barring Newspaper Articles, Whistleblowing & Over-Classification at Drake Trial The government's motion on over-classification claims that whether Drake thought there was rampant over-classification "is irrelevant." Over-classification is not a "thought" or theory that Drake or anyone else had. It is a fact of the Bush administration.

Unnecessary lies: A whistleblower's perspective on Necessary Secrets Schoenfeld identifies a problem -- the publication of true facts that are secret. But he never plumbs the deeper and more salient question: What if the true and secret facts are illegal?

The New Yorker's Damning Dissection of "Leak" Prosecution of Thomas Drake Former National Security Agency (NSA) official Thomas Drake faces some of the gravest charges that can be brought against an American: trial under the Espionage Act for allegedly "retaining" classified information. Thankfully, The New Yorker has put this case under a miscroscope and revealed this criminalization of whistleblowing to be the government covering up for its own sins of secret domestic surveillance.

What Have We Done: Executive Power, Drones, and Trump? The drone program is plagued by secrecy and unaccountability. That was true even before Trump put strike authority with the CIA and possibly relaxed civilian kill standards. Several whistleblowers have come forward to point out abusive practices and high turnover within the program, misleading government statements on the accuracy of strikes and targeting capabilities, and an overall pressure to launch strikes...

Punishment for NSA & DOJ Overclassification in Drake Case that former classification czar J. Breaking Justice Dept. Corruption in Birkenfeld Case: U.S. Gave UBS Kingpin Immunity It's gone from bad to worse. I've written previously about how Brad Birkenfeld, the whistleblower who shattered 75 years of Swiss bank secrecy, is the only one going to jail in this multi-billion dollar scandal. But now my dyspepsia has turned to projectile vomiting. I have asked in previous diaries why, when the U.S. had UBS kingpin Martin Liechti in its claws, it set him scot-free back to Switzerland.

WaPo, Politico, Washingtonian: Portrait of an Overzealous Prosecutor Recent news coverage of prosecutor William Welch's leadership of the Justice Department's war on whistle-blowers reveals that his overzealous and shady tactics weren't restricted to his handling of the botched prosecution of late-Senator Ted Stevens, a case that landed Welch and his team in a pile of still ongoing criminal investigations. Welch's tactics are at best idiosyncratic and ineffective and at worst unethical.

Whistleblower Rollercoaster & Espionage Hysteria The bizarre behavior of our government following the Wikileaks disclosures illustrates the growing totalitarianism of the Obama administration. With fascism creeping ever closer, it is necessary for people of good conscience to do more than merely complain. It is time to act.

DOJ: So-Called "Leakers" Are More Dangerous Than Spies The strength of government's unyielding animus toward whistleblowers is no more evident than in the latest statements from disgraced prosecutor William Welch, who is "redeeming" himself amidst prosecutorial misconduct allegations stemming from the botched case against late-senator Ted Stevens by prosecuting whistleblowers like Thomas Drake under the Espionage Act.
