Sunday, August 15, 2021'The Suicide of Capitalism,' Revisited Global warming is clearly getting worse, and so are its outcomes. Warnings have been issued with great regularity from the UN, from climate science and scientists, and etc. But nothing significant has happened, except that the predicted total disaster date has moved ever closer. The "why" has this happened can be summed up in one word "capitalism." I published a column on this subject about 6 1/2 years ago, reproduced here.

But compared with how fascism arrived in the 5 major fascist countries of the 20th cent., it is coming on in slow-motion, as an example of "American Exceptionalism."

Tuesday, July 24, 2018The Jewish Refugee Crisis in Europe, 1939 (with apologies for its length) This column offers a paper on the emigration/immigration of European Jews fleeing Nazi terror in the decade before the onset of World War II. It was written by my father, Harold J. Jonas, and published in the Contemporary Jewish Record in the Sept.-Oct. 1939 issue. Comparisons with the contemporary situation, from the Western border of Myanmar to the Southern border of the United States, are purely intentional.

However, long-term politically they face the Browning of America. They have already been preparing for that eventuality, long-term However, Trump's performance leading up to and in the wake of "El Paso" may have speeded up the formation of a major non-white coalition that could easily unseat him in 2020. Friday, May 8, 2020Tara Reade and the Sexual Assault Charge Against former Vice-President Biden: A Commentary Ms. Tara Reade has lodged a charge of sexual assault against former V-P Biden. 1st, it should be fully investigated. 2nd, the V-P has attempted to initiate that investigation in the Senate files. Guess what? McConnell said "no way." 3rd, the Repubs. are screaming "Kavanaugh-Ford." Dr. Ford testified under oath. Ms. Reade has said she will. But the real comparable is Trump. If the V-P is to be investigated, so must Trump be.

Wade." Any state that wants to can criminalize abortion. In my 1996 fictional future history book "The 15% Solution," a Republican-Christian-Alliance Party in 2005 amends the Constitution to, among other things, illegalize abortion. This chapter presents that amendment and a further discussion of it and what it meant for the country.

Wednesday, November 14, 2018The Supreme Court and Judicial Review Trump's choice to be Acting Attorney General, holds many far right-wing views on various aspects of the law (which makes him perfectly qualified for the job --- from Trump's point of view). This column offers a fictional version of one doctrine that Mr. Whitaker supported at least at one point in his career: that "Marbury v. Madison" was wrongly decided and thus the Supreme Court does not have he power of judicial review.

Ken Burns' self-styled documentary, "The Viet Nam War," has set off a large number of commentaries, on the film and the accompanying book, on the War, on the U.S. role, on the aftermath, and etc. One question about the horror (primarily for the people of Indo-China, most especially Viet Nam) that isn't often asked is "who won?" The conventional wisdom is that the U.S. lost. This column presents the case that the U.S. won.

There is some thought that these are relatively new elements in Republican doctrine. They are not. In fact they go back to the Party's origins in the 19th cent., as elucidated here.
