A Combined Response to the Comments Received on my Column "Why is the War Continuing This column consists of a combined set of replies/observations-on the many comments that I received on my column published just prior to this one: "Ukraine: Why is the War Continuing? There is responsibility on both Sides." Responding this way, if not entirely satisfactory for each of the commentators, certainly made life easier for me!

Ukraine: Why is the War Continuing? There is responsibility on both Sides The U.S. Left has been split on the Russia-Ukraine War. My previous columns have been highly critical of Putin (although taking a different position from the standard "NATO-made-him-do-it" stance of many Leftists). On the other hand, many other Leftists have taken a "Nazis run Ukraine and are totally responsible position." In this column, I review those positions, but then raise questions about Zelensky and his politics.

The 75 Years War Against the Soviet Union, Revisited There is much confusion about the relationship between the Soviet Union and the current regime of Vladimir Putin. There is actually no direct relationship, other than that the Putin dictatorship is the result of what I call "The 75 Years War Against the Soviet Union," which led to its eventual demise at the hands of Western Imperialism, and the massive, shall we say, "reorganization" that W.I. undertook After the Fall.

Vladimir Putin and the Invention of 'Industrial Feudalism' In this column I postulate the development of a new form of State-and-Economic structure. It is based on what has developed in modern Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union at the end of "The Seventy-Five Years War Against the Soviet Union" in 1992. (See OpEdNews "The 75 Years War" columns, for 2019.) Please note, I will posting an edited of them in this space next next week.

Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith, Chris Rock, and Republican Politics This is a different take on the Will Smith/Chris Rock controversy. No, I don't approve of the violence. But I also don't approve of making fun of somebody because they have a genetically-based condition, about which they can do nothing. More importantly, is the issue of the Repubs. making a big political-issue out of human states-of-being which are also genetically-determined, specifically homosexuality and trans-sexuality.

Vladimir Putin: Feudalism Redux (courtesy of the United States, and other Western Powers) Modern Russia, under Vladimir Putin is not a capitalist, but a feudal, state. He is the monarch-with-absolute-powers, and the "oligarchs" are his "dukes," with no political power but plenty of leeway to make as much money as they can. That Putin is the absolute monarch of Russia, is the principal reason for the invasion of Ukraine. How this came to be, rather than a conversion to capitalism, is also the subject of this column

Putin and Ukraine: Making the World Safe for Plutocracy This column is brief treatment of the possible "why" for Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Briefly, I don't think it has anything to do with NATO (and in the column I explain why). NATO is a good excuse for Putin, to do what he is doing. And his aim is to show that world that it is safe for plutocracy.

Ukraine. Some Historical Background, Updated. Plus, a Brief Settlement Proposal This column presents some of the recent history of the present Russia/Ukraine/U.S. conflict. I present it because even though it is recent, it is not widely known. Further, I present some referenced sources that indicate that the West, and the U.S. in particular, did give the Soviet Union guarantees that as they moved their sphere of influence East, NATO would not move to fill in the gaps. Plus I offer a draft peace deal.

The Anti-Vaxxers and their [new] Out-of-Context, Excerpted, Arguments Anti-vaxxers/Insurrectionist-defenders are using a widening collection of arguments to justify their position(s). One is a supposed excerpt from a Federalist Paper attributed to Alexander Hamilton. Interestingly enough, when taken in the contexct in whihc it was written it expresses a Hamiltonian position quite the opposite of that which the anti-vaxxer/pro-insurrectionists say it did. As this column illustrates.

Flashing Red Lights and the Trumpsurrection of 2021 In consideration of the thoughts expressed by some at the time, and much more frequently since, that there were "Red Lights Flashing" before the Trumpsurrection of Jan. 6, 2021, I am republishing this column that I originally posted on Jan. 5, 2021. I think that it provides some perspective on what we as a nation are up against this time around (and sure as shootin', literally(?), there is going to be anohter time around.

The Three Big Lies of 2022: Two Concern the Pandemic This column reviews the "The 3 Big Lies" of Trump/COVID era: 1. "The Election as Stolen;" 2. there is some kind of forced-no-way-out mass vaccination program in the U.S.; 3. the U.S. vaccination program is like the Holocaust. The first I (and many others) have dealt with elsewhere. For the 2nd, I explain what a "mandate" is and that in practice it means requirement-for-participation. For the 3rd, I describe the Holocaust.

War-Gaming Against Fascism to Avoid MAD, with these Republicans: Really?" Recently in The New York Times a column discussed the threat of mutually-assured-destruction, MAD, which seemed to become particularly acute in the 1980s. The authors participated in war games designed to prevent that occurrence. They using the technique in the prevention of the onset of Republo-fascism (they do not use that term). I point out that it is not transferable. In MAD, neither side wanted to win. The Repubs. do.

Some (relatively) Brief (believe it or not) Thoughts on the Prospects for Civil War and/or Secession A possible second U.S. civil war in the context of oncoming Republo-fascism is much in the news these days. This column presents some preliminary thoughts on the matter, plus some thoughts on the related prospect for secession, in the context of a possible Supreme Court reversal of Roe v. Wade (which reversal could became as significant as the Dred Scott decision).

January 6, 2021 - At the Time; and Now This is one of many, many retrospectives that will be being published on this day. It is a day which foretold of the Fascist trap into which this nation might easily have fallen, and still well might, if the burgeoning Republo-fascist party and its shiny headlamp ornament Donald Trump have their way. This column presents a view from that gloomy day, and then a view that is looking from now towards the future, with a warning.

"The National Plan for Social Peace" It is very possible that the Supreme Court will reverse Roe v. Wade and the states will be left to their own devices vis-a-vis abortion rights. And then, there might be further limitations on civil liberties enacted. I dealt with this issue at length in a book of "future fiction" published in 1996. This column presents an excerpt from the book dealing with such policies in a U.S. successor state, "The New American Republics."

Reversing Marbury v. Madison In the recent Supreme Court hearings concerning a law passed in the State of Mississippi that would effectively ban freedom of choice in the outcome of pregnancy, and might very well be used to overturn Roe v. Wade, the issue of the power of the Court to review actions of the other two branches of the government for their constitutionality was raised. This column presents a fictional Supreme Court decision that does just that.

Kyle Rittenhaus, the 'Trial,' and the formation of the U.S.S.A. (Orig.: 'Die Sturmabteilung') The Rittenhouse "trial" was a farce. That is what this column is about in part. But it is also that a process which seems to be occurring in this country, one to create a series of private "militias," very similar in function, and to a certain extent in form, to the historically most famous of them all, the Nazi Sturmabteilung, the "Storm Division," which helped propel Hitler to power. Ah, but what color will their shirts be?

Abortion Rights: Once More into the Breach, Dear Friends I have been writing on abortion rights and how the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution could be used as an additional weapon in the battle to save them.
