I was born in India and moved to the US to train as a physicist. I received a PhD in 1989 from the University of Chicago. After a stint as a post-doc I changed careers to journalism and served on the board of editors of Scientific American for seven years. I left the magazine to have a baby and to write my first book, The Land of Naked People, a study of conflicts between civilization and hunter-gatherers of the Andaman Islands, with the help of a Guggenheim fellowship. My latest book, Churchill's Secret War: The British Empire and the Ravaging of India during World War II, will be published in August by Basic Books. I live in Germany with my husband and son.
