I was born and raised in Chicago in a liberal Democratic home my Grandfather was a labor union organizer my Father a Democratic district committeeman my Mother was an election judge. My earliest memories were of passing out Kennedy yard signs from the back of the car, late in 1962 we moved to Dallas and if it hadn't been raining that morning in November I would have been in Dealey plaza while my Father was sitting in the Trade mart. In 1965 we moved to Montgomery Al. and I witnessed the march from Selma to Montgomery in 1967 we moved back to Chicago and my sister was selected as a page for the Illinois delegation of the Democratic National Convention as you can Imagine she never made it inside the building. In 1972 my mother passed away and the family disintegrated, by age seventeen I was homeless.

Don't Fear a Green Tomorrow The future does not belong to those who write phonebooks, nor better horse harness. The future belongs to the innovators, those who bring new ideas to the table, in a zero sum game more of the same is less. Clinging to the past is an admission of defeat. The President is at it again, telling us, the Saudi Arabian increase in oil production is not enough, we must drill in ANWR. He tells the truth about the problem,

Six Dollars a Gallon and Lenny Bruce Of course Lenny Bruce was not afraid, he was too wide eyed and amphetamine fueled with comic energy and in his heart of hearts he never actually believed that they would really pull the trigger and destroy him. Even in all his anti power structure rants he naively believed them to be only ignorant and not maniacal. Maybe maniacal is the wrong word but the leadership today is at the very least self-destructive.

McCain's Greatest Enemy The Presidential campaign has begun in earnest, the policies, the politics, the personalities. The character assassinations, the implications, the reflexive comments and the unsaid innuendo, but for just a moment lets drop back into a huddle. We, as a species, tend to become overwrought and miss the obvious, outside of the politics, outside of party; we tend over-complicate, while dreaming of flight we forget about gravity

The Kamikaze Candidacy In any election all the candidates want to win, but is it possible to want to win too much?

Jabberwocky "I don't know what you mean by 'glory,'" Alice said. Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. "Of course you don't -- till I tell you. I meant "there's a nice knock-down argument for you!'" "But 'glory' doesn't mean 'a nice knock-down argument,'" Alice objected. "When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in a rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less."

The Oil Panic of 2008 CNBC's Michelle Caruso-Cabrera took umbrage at a Congressman for describing oil company profits as obscene. Explaining that most of their viewers are investors and

The Sucker Rally Great news! Discover Card has come out with a new kind of credit card. Not a credit card to help eliminate the need for carrying cash, or writing clumsy checks when you are out of town. In fact, this card isn't for buying things at all; it is for helping you to pay off the balances on all your other credit cards. The credit game is how we operate.

Wandering in the Woods Originally I had intended to write about the rising cost of oil, but I was waylaid and shanghied from my destination. The path that I was wandering was heavily wooded with charts and graphs, each with footnotes and explanations as to what each spike or dip meant, that they blocked my path. It soon became clear to me exactly what the footnotes and explanations meant; they meant that I wasn't going to get any useful information

Living in the Past There once was a time in America when change was welcomed, a time long ago when new ideas were embraced. That was the age of liberalism, when the Sewer Socialists reigned in Milwaukee, making radical decisions such as having clean water to drink is a birthright. Also, the forty-hour week, the living wage, labor unions, safety standards that were not just for the employees, but for the customers, as well.

My Last Day of Work How could this happen to me? My sector, my department, had always been the best in our employee evaluations. In every category we scored in the highest possible percentile; efficiency, timeliness, loyalty, patriotism, and yes, even in dogma, we were number one. So how could this happen? It must be a mistake, that's it! A mistake,

" Rich people, God Bless Us!" Here in the polarized states of America, with a little media magic, a draft dodger can become a war hero and a war hero a charlatan. After the New York Times exposé explains the media's complicity in what has been going on, well thanks, but no thanks. Old news, Robert Novak and Judith Miller, Op Ed's by Richard Perle and Pat Buchanon, the story then turns to inside baseball.

The Two Americas The Bush administration, after the contested election of 2000, sought to woo public opinion in their favor. Facing a polarized electorate, they initiated a tax rebate scheme; the actual propose was to pass out alms to the poor to keep them fat and happy. While, in the meantime, the administration was opening the doors of the treasury in the greatest shift of the tax burden in American history.

The War, Next-door "Obsessed with the power of Spain in his youth, Cromwell failed to note the rise of France." The same can be said of our own current Cromwell, obsessed with the desire to restart and reframe the cold war under a Republican unipolar stance, they have lost sight of everything else. Watching their Neocon kite intently as it dances on the breeze until they've run with it, off the cliff.

Finding Bottom Finding the bottom in mud is a matter of degree. There is the bottom but it's not the bottom, it's only the top of the bottom. The organs of Capitalism are dealing with a King Kong of the Apocalypse; they feed it billions of dollars the way they would throw it Oreos, trying to keep it happy and satiated.

The Scarlet Letter What a can of worms our forefathers opened up with their beliefs about religious freedom. Of course, they were seeking escape from state-sponsored religious dogma and forced contributions. Overall, religious freedom has been a successful experiment but with some notable failures. Quakers were beaten and murdered for their pacifist beliefs and more than one or two snake handlers have failed the ultimate test of sanctification.

The Lying Tree Mark Twain once advised that the art of lying had gone downhill because of so many rank amateurs having entered the field. Today, however, we hardly even consider it a skilled trade anymore. In political campaigns it was once left to the candidate and top campaign management alone. Today it is farmed out to consultants and to the media, the manual laborers of lying.

Who Goes There? We, the American government, along with our corporate interests have created a situation that must soon be addressed. American industry, with the government's blessing, has created a Chinese monster. The People's Republic of China, since winning its victory in 1949, has been a communist, military dictatorship but has always been viewed in a different light than her Russian neighbor.

When Did the Movies Stop Talking? I had a few coins in my pocket this week and thought my wife and I would go to the movies. Times have been tough and we hadn't been in a while and it seemed like a good way to get out of the house. As I looked on the movie websites I discovered that there was nothing that I wanted to see. Nothing I would chance investing $18.00 in plus $20.00 for popcorn and drinks.

Imprudent Curiosity It has always been funny to me how the light can shine in different shades, the same as revelations of wrongdoing by State Department employees are described as "Imprudent Curiosity." During the travelgate scandal of the Clinton administration, Right-wing pundits were busy gathering wood for a public burning of the guilty. "Oh, the humanity!"

The New Magic Kingdom Move over Disney, fantasyland is no longer your domain alone. Now there is a new contender for the title, "The Happiest Place on Earth." Why shouldn't it be so? If you are about to be foreclosed on and put out of your house, your only chance for escape might be Disney. When you wish upon a star and all that rot, when you take out a loan and find yourself unable to pay it back, the President calls you irresponsible.
