How To Destroy An Entire Country From a recent 188-page report by the World Health Organization come these ghastly and appalling factoids: Suicide rates rose 40% in the first six months of 2011 alone. Murder has doubled. 9,100 doctors in Greece, roughly one out of every seven, have been laid off.

You Can't Do Nothing About Nothing A few weeks ago, the Republicans unveiled their 2014 agenda, and it was . . . nothing. I kid you not. Many people saw the absence of an agenda as a problem. I think that it understates the problem. My concern is that the Republicans don't know where to go, not that they don't know how to get there.
Boehner Cries...Again, From ImagesAttr

Why Boehner Cries I know why House Speaker John Boehner walked out of debt ceiling talks with President Obama on Friday. It's because Boehner can't deliver. It doesn't matter what terms the President offers. It's that simple. Boehner can't deliver the votes.

Should Only Seniors Be Allowed to Drive on the Highways? | Rep. Alan Grayson We want a public option. We need a public option. And that public option already exists -- we just need to open it up, to all Americans.

Who Benefits from Keystone XL? All of the oil that passes through the Trans-Alaska Pipeline has to be sold in the United States. Why not the same rule for the Keystone XL Pipeline? But instead, we allow a tax-free zone, to facilitate Chinese energy independence at the expense of our own. Why does Uncle Sam have to be Uncle Sucker?

Did the GOP Just Give Away $130 Billion of Public Property? In December, two Republican senators, John McCain and Jeff Flake, pushed Congress and the President into giving away what could amount to over $130 billion in public property. That's enough to provide every single unemployed American a minimum-wage job for an entire year. And yet the GOP big-shots call themselves "fiscal conservatives"! "Fiscal conservatives," my you-know-what.

This Literally Has Nothing to Do With Us As the debate regarding a U.S. military attack on Syria shifts to Congress, Congressman Alan Grayson was back on national TV on Sunday, forcefully arguing against war

The Myths That Are Killing Us No Republican candidate seems to have the clarity or the courage to face the destructive stupidities they claim they believe.

The Republican Plan: Punch Me in the Face This is how the right wing does it. They pay people to clean for them, to cook for them, to drive for them, and now: To punch for them. Or, more specifically, to punch me for them. We knew they're crazy. It turns out that they're also lazy. Too lazy to throw a punch themselves.

Dumb Rich People Since 1929, $10,000 invested in the stock market under Democratic Presidents (over 40 years) had become $300,671. Meanwhile, $10,000 invested in the stock market under Republican Presidents (over 35 years) had become only $11,733.

What Made America Famous Many Americans believe that the top 1% is responsible for the rising tide of inequality in America, which is swamping and drowning the other 99%. Professor Emmanuel Saez of the University of California at Berkeley says that they are wrong. The top 1% is not the problem, he says. The top 0.1% is the problem.

Lincoln: "Labor Is the Superior of Capital" 150 years ago President Lincoln spoke to a joint session of Congress: "Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration." Have we forgotten that these words lie at the heart of our democratic values?

Tax Cuts For Limbaugh, Beck and Palin Maybe we should call them the "Rush Limbaugh Tax Cuts." Or the "Glenn Beck Tax Cuts." Because the reason why these right-wing blowhards support tax cuts for the rich is that they support tax cuts for themselves. I'm not going to vote for tax cuts for the rich. I'm going to vote for jobs.

Aaron Swartz, R.I.P. For some of us who rock the boat, we end up losing our property. For some of us who rock the boat, we end up losing our freedom. For some of us who rock the boat, we end up losing our families. And in Aaron's case, his life. And yet, he was willing to face the facts, and to let that happen. To keep striving, to keep struggling, to keep trying to shake things up.

Congressional oversight of the NSA is a joke. I should know, I'm in Congress Edward Snowden's revelations demonstrate that members of Congress who are asked to authorize these programs are not privy to the same information provided to junior analysts at the NSA, and even private contractors who sell services to foreign governments. The only time intelligence committees disclose classified information to us, your elected representatives, is when it serves the purposes of the "intelligence community."

HR 4789 and The Public Option: The Way Forward Health care reform -- here's where we are. The House of Representatives is about to vote on a Senate bill without a public option. It looks like the reconciliation amendment will not have a public option. The House bill had a public option, but once the House passes the Senate bill, that's history. Which is why I introduced H.R. 4789, the Public Option Act.

Gabby Giffords: A Few Words I know nothing about the man who shot Gabby, and what was going through his mind when he did this. But I will tell you this - if he shot Gabby out of hatred, then it wasn't Gabby he was shooting, but rather some cartoon version of her, drawn by her political opposition. Because there is no way - NO WAY - that anyone who really knows Gabby could hate her or hurt her. She is a kind, gentle soul.

Legislation Constipation There has been nothing in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives even remotely resembling a line-by-line vote on whether each one of those spending cuts and tax increases, individually, is good or bad. Just John Boehner holding his breath until the Democrats "agree" to extending tax breaks for the rich, and cutting Social Security and Medicare benefits.

I Won't Close the Lemonade Stands I would like to assure my opponent, and all other right-wing paranoid crackpots, that I will neither eliminate children's lemonade stands, nor triple the price of gasoline, nor outlaw guns and ammunition. If I have a secret plan to do any of those things, it's so secret that even I don't know about it. It's like I'm the Manchurian Candidate, or something.
