Why wasn't the war an issue in the election? "I have no hope, energy or optimism that we will ever be heard. I no longer stand vigil against war. Neither war was even an issue in the election." The above quote is from a message sent by one stalwart peace activist explaining why her local peace group is disbanding. Do you feel the same way?

Why the Democrats lost To understand why millions of sensible people -- people who were not Christian fundamentalists, Tea-party fanatics or birth-certificate conspiracy theorists -- might have voted for the Republicans this time around, you only need to ask yourself two questions:

Time Magazine's concern for Afghan women Time Magazine's choice for its cover of an image of a young Afghan woman horribly mutilated by her husband under the direction of a Taliban commander, paired with the provocative headline: "What happens if the U.S. leaves Afghanistan" shows that supporters of the Afghan war still have some powerful emotional buttons they can push. How do we push back?

Is liberalism an idea whose time is past? A recent Gallup Poll shows widespread uncertainty about the "progressive" political label, with the majority of those responding (54%) saying they are unsure what "progressive" means. Does this indicate an opportunity for those of us who consider ourselves progressive to define "progressive" to mean what we think it should mean? And whatever happened to "liberal?"

55 mph = 15% less gas used = no offshore drilling needed If we cut our national oil consumption by just 10%, we could eliminate the need for any offshore oil drilling in U.S. waters. How could we reach this goal? How about driving slower, even when the drive is really, really boring?

No more "brilliant" Generals, please Michael Hastings, the Rolling Stone reporter who published the story that was General Stanley McChrystal's undoing, describes the General as "brilliant." Among the General's "brilliant" observations: The presence of American soldiers in Afghanistan, and the Afghan casualties they cause, are fueling the insurgency. But what good are insights like these if you're not willing to draw the obvious conclusion?

A Guantánamo detainee in your town? Two Massachusetts towns say "yes" Since the opening of the U.S. military prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, a well-orchestrated propaganda campaign has stoked our fears of those held in the prison. But some towns are now shaking off the fear and fighting back against the fear-mongers with an unusual tactic: Town-hall resolutions that invite the Federal government to relocate a released Guantánamo detainee in their town.

Majority of Afghan "Peace Jirga" Delegates Call for Withdrawal of Foreign Forces A majority of the delegates attending an Afghan "Peace Jirga" arranged by Afghan President Hamid Karzai have called for an immediate cease-fire by U.S. and other international forces, and an even larger majority demanded a timetable for withdrawal of foreign forces. The calls came despite the best efforts of the Karzai administration to head off any peace initiatives that might limit the actions of U.S./NATO forces.

Ten lessons from a U.S. defeat Remember Iraq? "No blood for oil"? "Bush lied, people died"? Takes you back, doesn't it? These days, even for that small percentage of Americans who still pay attention to any of our wars, Iraq seems like last year's news. And that's a shame because there's much we can learn from Iraq about how to end an empire.

Will the U.S. leave Iraq? For nearly two years, Gen Ray Odierno, top U.S. commander in Iraq, and others have been hinting that the U.S. military might find a way to stay in Iraq beyond the Dec. 2011 withdrawal deadline required by the 2008 U.S.-Iraq withdrawal agreement. Those plans have now been dealt a severe blow with the strong showing of Muqtada al Sadr's followers in the March election. What options do the militarists have left?

Cheer up, Progressives, You're more Powerful than you Thought! Feeling powerless? A trip into the upside-down world of right-wing thought might be just what you need. And before you dismiss right-wing warnings of the impending socialist revolution as paranoid fantasies, take a moment to ask if fearful conservatives may have stumbled onto a kernel of truth.

Mapping a path to single-payer For those of us who want to see the U.S. enact a single-payer health care system, the past year has been a frustrating and even humiliating experience. Is it possible to look for the bright side? Can we lay out a path from the Rube Goldberg contraption cooked up by House and Senate Democrats towards a sensible system of health care delivery? Let's give it a try.
