I am a sometime software quality assurance engineer who lives in Martinez, California. These days I amuse myself by playing harmonica. The harmonica is a wonderful musical instrument. It is easy to play, expressive, cheap, and portable. I always have my harmonica in my pocket. If there's ever a blues emergency I'm ready.

For many years I tried to get away with not thinking because it made my brain hurt. You might say, though, that the last eight years or so drove me to think. I participated in the 2004 and 2006 political campaigns, which was something I hadn't done since the halcyon days of Clean Gene McCarthy.

As I am currently out of work I do have too much time on my hands. As I do occasionally have an opinion about something and as I am told I write well the thought has crossed my mind to find a writer's group and turn myself in. Failing that, this Web site seems to be unusually hospitable to word slingers. We'll see what happens.

Obama Fakes Left, Goes Right in His Health Care Reform Speech The political game that Barack Obama plays is to seem progressive while actually promoting a right of center agenda. This becomes clearer as one looks carefully at his major speech on health care reform. It is really up to progressives to make substantive health care reform happen as Obama will not meaningfully lead on this issue.

Torture, Phil Hendrie, and political expediency A summary of why torture by American forces is illegal in spite of arguments to the contrary. In spite of this, the Obama administration won't prosecute because they believe it is not expedient to do so. This sets a precedent that is a threat to liberty. "Limited government" conservatives shouldn't let them get away with it.

Obama's War Rests on Dubious Assumptions Obama's speech on what he is going to do in Afghanistan rests on a few dubious assumptions. He posits a central government that basically doesn't exist, local security forces associated with this non-existent government, attacking al-Qaida bases that are largely in Pakistan. This war may become a realization of the never-ending wars in frontier areas described in Orwell's 1984.

There is a double standard in bailout funding There is a double standard in the way bailout money is disbursed. The manipulators of wealth are favored over the creators of wealth.

What To Do for Health Insurance Reform While Congress is Away A modest proposal/plea for people to do some grunt work to advocate for health insurance reform.

Time to Unsubscribe from "Organizing for America" Enough is enough! If you haven't unsubscribe from "Organizing for America" yet now is the time to do so. For me, Mr. Obama's backing off on the public option in health care reform is the last straw!
