Blind Justice It seemed inconceivable that a NY Court would overrule the Board of Elections and allow DREs to be purchased. But on 2/4/8, that's what happened, frustrating advocates who thought we'd finally prevailed over the DRE threat. The ruling sets another precedent that the right of voting machine vendors to turn a profit supersedes that of voters to demand that the equipment we spend our tax dollars on be up to the job.

They're Baaaack... I told you we couldn't get complacent. The DRE vendors are like zombies - every time you think they're dead, they rise right up and come back at you. True to form, just after we thought we'd killed DREs for good in New York State, they're back. DRE vendor Liberty has asked for a temporary restraining order in Albany Supreme Court, asking to be included on the list of voting machines approved in NY.

Paper Ballots for NY! After five years of hard work on the part of voting integrity advocates, New York State has rejected DREs and approved only ballot markers for use in 2008 polling places. This momentous decision by virtually guarantees that New York State will vote on paper ballots and ballot scanners in 2009.

Breakdown at the Board As I sit here, I'm embarrassed. Today I witnessed an appalling display of how willing are some in the State Board of Elections to represent the interests of DRE vendors, even when this directly conflicts with the interests of voters and the requirements of state law.

New Yorkers win Round One in fight for source code protections Neither the Microsoft amendment nor any other proposals being pushed by voting machine vendor lobbyists made it into any of the thousands of bills passed in this last crazy week of the session. The citizens of New York State stood up to these powerful private interests and won. A rapid response of citizens to this threat to our essential protections resulted in over 3000 calls to legislators in just over two days.

Citizen Poll Watching Effort Banned by Troy City School Board One day prior to the Troy City School District elections,the Board of Education halted an effort by citizens groups to observe the polls during Tuesday's controversial School District Election. The election will use uncertified electronic voting machines and be overseen by the LibertyVote DRE vendor.
