Uri Avnery is a longtime Israeli peace activist. Since 1948 has advocated the setting up of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. In 1974, Uri Avnery was the first Israeli to establish contact with PLO leadership. In 1982 he was the first Israeli ever to meet Yassir Arafat, after crossing the lines in besieged Beirut. He served three terms in the Israeli Parliament (Knesset), and is the founder of Gush Shalom (Peace Bloc). Visit his Website.

At the decisive moment, when everything hung in the balance, when history held its breath, he addressed the masses on TV, telling them bluntly: "If I am your leader, you will follow my course! Is ISIS Coming? If ISIS is now our main enemy, yesteryear's enemies become potential allies. Even the abominable Bashar al-Assad. Definitely Iran, Hizbollah and Hamas. Israel must reconsider its attitude to all of them. A great Israeli statesman would recognize the historic challenge and the historic opportunity -- and seize it. Unfortunately, there is no great Israeli statesman in sight.

Wine, Blood and Gasoline The entire country is now aflame. East Jerusalem is already a war zone, with daily demonstrations, riots and bloodshed. In Israel proper, since the Kafr Kanna killing, Arab citizens are also mounting daily strikes and demonstrations. In the West Bank, there were some demonstrations and a fatal stabbing, after which an Arab was shot and killed.

The New Mandela For some time now, the world has lost much of its interest in Palestine. Everything looks quiet. Netanyahu has succeeded in deflecting world attention from Palestine to Iran. But in this country, nothing is ever static. While it seems that nothing is happening, settlements are growing incessantly, and so is the deep resentment of the Palestinians who see this happening before their eyes.

It has deteriorated into a colonial police force, the instrument of a system of oppression of another people. In the performance of this role, many acts of brutality are committed every day. We must get rid of the occupation, by all available means, the quicker the better. Every true friend of Israel around the world must help.

Of Bombs and Comics Netanyahu had the brilliant idea of attacking Iran just before the US elections, hoping that the hands of American politicians would be tied. Who would dare to restrain Israel at such a time? Who would refuse help to Israel when the Iranians counter-attacked? But like so many of Netanyahu's brilliant ideas, this one, too, flopped. Most TV newscasts did not mention the fact at all.errible as the deed itself is, to my mind the public reaction is even worse. Because there isn't any.

But for sheer influence, Aljazeera trumps them all. During the last decade, it has changed the Arab world beyond recognition. In the last few weeks, it has wrought miracles.

The Real Menace Bashar al-Assad has kept Syria together, protected its many minorities and kept the Israeli border quiet. Compared to IS, he is an ally. Our own Bibi is as innocent of any understanding as a new-born child. He is shrewd, shallow and ignorant. His Iranian obsession blinds him to the new realities. Fascinated by the wolf in front of him, Bibi is oblivious to the frightful tiger creeping up behind him.

Separation is Beautiful The Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, is busy with enacting a new law, called the Nation Law, which is intended to make clear that the Jewishness of the Jewish State takes precedence over democracy and human rights. Israel has no constitution, but until now it was assumed that Israel was equally "Jewish" and "democratic." The new law is about to abolish that notion.

The Great Conspiracy Most Ashkenazis (Jews of European descent) who had been born in the country, or immigrated years before, thought that they had done their part and suffered enough, and that now it was up to the new Oriental immigrants to do theirs.
