Mandela: The Movie The movie shows how Nelson Mandela, completely alone, threw himself against the rising wave. At the decisive moment, when everything hung in the balance, when history held its breath, he addressed the masses on TV, telling them bluntly: "If I am your leader, you will follow my course! Otherwise, look for another leader!" Incredibly, the people followed him.

Another Superfluous War HOW DID it start? Stupid question. Conflagrations along the Gaza Strip don't start. They are just a continuous chain of events, each claimed to be in "retaliation" for the previous one. Action is followed by reaction, which is followed by retaliation, which is followed by ...

Is ISIS Coming? If ISIS is now our main enemy, yesteryear's enemies become potential allies. Even the abominable Bashar al-Assad. Definitely Iran, Hizbollah and Hamas. Israel must reconsider its attitude to all of them. A great Israeli statesman would recognize the historic challenge and the historic opportunity -- and seize it. Unfortunately, there is no great Israeli statesman in sight.

Talking Zionism Since the foundation of the State of Israel, the term Zionism has been elevated to the status of a state ideology, if not state religion. Everything the state does is justified by the use of this word. Some would say that Zionism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.

Wine, Blood and Gasoline The entire country is now aflame. East Jerusalem is already a war zone, with daily demonstrations, riots and bloodshed. In Israel proper, since the Kafr Kanna killing, Arab citizens are also mounting daily strikes and demonstrations. In the West Bank, there were some demonstrations and a fatal stabbing, after which an Arab was shot and killed.

The New Mandela For some time now, the world has lost much of its interest in Palestine. Everything looks quiet. Netanyahu has succeeded in deflecting world attention from Palestine to Iran. But in this country, nothing is ever static. While it seems that nothing is happening, settlements are growing incessantly, and so is the deep resentment of the Palestinians who see this happening before their eyes.

The Face of a Boy The Israel that presents itself to the world now is a state of occupiers, of oppressors, of brutal colonizers, of soldiers armed to the teeth who arrest people in the middle of the night and persecute them during the day. The terrified face of young Muhammad Tamimi may well haunt us for a long time to come.

Two Faces SHAMIR, the dead honest fanatic, has many followers. Olmert, the living corrupt pragmatist, has very few. Netanyahu, their current successor, has the vices of both and the virtues of neither.

Can the Duke become King? HERZOG WON his first success of the current campaign by forming a common list with Tzipi Livni. It is now up to him to keep up the momentum and make alliances with -- possibly -- Lapid, Kahlon and Meretz. If successful in the elections, he must stretch out his hands to the Orthodox and the Arabs.

Who is the vassal? If you are very cynical, you might well say that both Trump and Bibi are up to their respective necks in criminal investigations. With a bit of luck, both might end up in prison. What better way to divert the attention of their subjects than a little war? It is a precept that has been tried out since the beginning of the world, and it almost never fails.

Zionists All Religious Zionists want a state based on and dominated by the Jewish religion. National-religious Zionists believe that God has sent the Jews into "exile" because of their sins, and wanted to compel God by their deeds to send the Messiah now. Atheist Zionists declare the Jews are a nation, not a religion, and want nothing to do with the Jewish faith.

Israel -- The Great Rift For more than 40 years now, the army has not fought a real war against a real military. It has deteriorated into a colonial police force, the instrument of a system of oppression of another people. In the performance of this role, many acts of brutality are committed every day. We must get rid of the occupation, by all available means, the quicker the better. Every true friend of Israel around the world must help.

"Don't Talk Zionism!" Let Binyamin Netanyahu call Yitzhak Herzog, the leader of the opposition, an "anti-Zionist," and he will object more strongly than if he had been called a mere traitor. Anti-Zionist is awful. Unforgivable. Yet if any one of these were asked what Zionism really is, he would stop dead in his tracks. Zionism -- why, everybody knows what Zionism it. What a question! Zionism is er...er...er.

Of Bombs and Comics Netanyahu had the brilliant idea of attacking Iran just before the US elections, hoping that the hands of American politicians would be tied. Who would dare to restrain Israel at such a time? Who would refuse help to Israel when the Iranians counter-attacked? But like so many of Netanyahu's brilliant ideas, this one, too, flopped. Obama has told Netanyahu in no uncertain terms: No attack on Iran before the elections. Or else..

The Atrocity THE ATROCIOUS way Muhammad was murdered was not mentioned at first. Most Israeli newspapers mentioned the fact in a few words on an inner page. Most TV newscasts did not mention the fact at all.errible as the deed itself is, to my mind the public reaction is even worse. Because there isn't any.

A Crazy Prophet Much has been said about the part played by the social networks, like Facebook and Twitter, in the revolutions that are now turning the Arab world upside down. But for sheer influence, Aljazeera trumps them all. During the last decade, it has changed the Arab world beyond recognition. In the last few weeks, it has wrought miracles.

Children of Stones The simple fact is that there is no choice between a Two State and a One State solution, because One State is no solution at all, but a pipe-dream. Or a nightmare. So is there no choice? Of course there is. There always is. The choice is between the Two State solution and No Solution. Eternal war.

The Real Menace Bashar al-Assad has kept Syria together, protected its many minorities and kept the Israeli border quiet. Compared to IS, he is an ally. Our own Bibi is as innocent of any understanding as a new-born child. He is shrewd, shallow and ignorant. His Iranian obsession blinds him to the new realities. Fascinated by the wolf in front of him, Bibi is oblivious to the frightful tiger creeping up behind him.

Separation is Beautiful The Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, is busy with enacting a new law, called the Nation Law, which is intended to make clear that the Jewishness of the Jewish State takes precedence over democracy and human rights. Israel has no constitution, but until now it was assumed that Israel was equally "Jewish" and "democratic." The new law is about to abolish that notion.

The Great Conspiracy Most Ashkenazis (Jews of European descent) who had been born in the country, or immigrated years before, thought that they had done their part and suffered enough, and that now it was up to the new Oriental immigrants to do theirs. Cultural differences were huge, but nobody paid much attention to them.
