Uri Avnery is a longtime Israeli peace activist. Since 1948 has advocated the setting up of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. In 1974, Uri Avnery was the first Israeli to establish contact with PLO leadership. In 1982 he was the first Israeli ever to meet Yassir Arafat, after crossing the lines in besieged Beirut. He served three terms in the Israeli Parliament (Knesset), and is the founder of Gush Shalom (Peace Bloc). Visit his Website.

Divide et Impera The Palestinian people, torn apart and rent by mutual hatreds, are far removed from an effectual struggle for freedom and independence. But this is a temporary situation. In the end, this situation will explode. The Palestine population, growing day by day (or night by night) will come together again and restart the struggle for liberation. Like every other people on earth, they will fight for their freedom.

The Treaty Almost all political parties fell in line with Netanyahu's policy, competing with each other in their demonstrations of abject loyalty. Everybody rushed to support the Prime Minister at this crucial hour. One of Netanyahu's arguments is that the Iranians can and will cheat the naive Americans and build the bomb. He is sure that this is possible. Well, he should know. We did it, didn't we?

To be Greek The Greek crisis arises from the fact that the Euro is not based on such a federation. The Greek economic breakdown would have been stopped by the European central bank long before it had reached the present point. Money would have flowed from Brussels to Athens without anybody even noticing.

War Crimes? Us??? Once you start a war, "stuff happens," as the man said. There may be more war crimes or less, but there will be a lot. The convenient way out is to proclaim that all UN officials are by nature anti-Semites and Israel-haters, so that answering their questions is counter-productive. We are moral. We are right. By nature. We can't help it. Those who accuse us must be anti-Semites. Simple logic.

Isratin or Palestrael? I have a great respect for the adherents of the One-State Solution. Their motives are admirable. Their vision lofty. But it is disconnected from reality. I WOULD like to make one point quite clear: for me, the Two-State Solution is not a recipe for separation and divorce, but on the contrary, a kind of wedding.

The Real Naqba Like a Greek tragedy, the Naqba was conditioned by the character of all the participants, victimizer and victim. Any solution of the "problem" must start with an unequivocal apology by Israel for its part in the Naqba. The practical solution must include at least a symbolic return of an agreed number of refugees to Israeli territory.

Who Will Save Israel? Israel is famously "the Only Democracy in the Middle East." That is practically its second official name. It is debatable how a state that dominates another people, depriving it of all human rights, not to mention citizenship, can be called a democracy. But Jewish Israelis have been used to this for 48 years, and just ignore this fact.

IF YOU fill a sack with cats, you will be accused of cruelty to animals. But what is that compared to filling 18 ministries with politicians?

Its ally, Tzipi Livni, has dragged the Palestinian negotiations on and on without coming an inch nearer to peace. Labor's opposition to the rightist economic policies was feeble.

Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Bomb? Persian civilization is one of the oldest in the world. It has created a great religion and influenced many others, including Judaism. Iranians are fiercely proud of that civilization. To imagine that the present leaders of Iran would even contemplate risking the very existence of Persia out of hatred of Israel is both ridiculous and megalomaniac.

The decisive majority has voted for an apartheid state between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, in which democracy will slowly disappear. The decision is not yet final. Israeli democracy has lost a battle. It has not yet lost the war. The country is in existential danger. Not from the outside, but from the inside.
