It's an Oily Night in Georgia for McCain The aggressive tone of McCain's condemnation of the recent Russian invasion of Georgia should come as no surprise given the historic roots of McCain's bellicose ideology rooted in his founding role in the neoconservative initiative known as the Project for the New American Century (PNAC). Nor should it come as any surprise that McCain's chief advisor, Randy Scheunemann, who has echoed McCain's bellicosity, is not only a lobby

Mass Surveillance and State Control: The Total Information Awareness Project Now afoot is an interconnected web of trends toward greater and greater modes of control, which will predictably advance with the advent of new technologies and the loosening of constitutional safeguards against the abridgment of privacy. Elliot Cohen's new book, Mass Surveillance and State Control, details these dangerous trends and makes the case for organizing a grass roots movement to stop these trends before it's too late

Crime, Conspiracy, and Wikileaks When Robert Novak published the name of a CIA Operative in the Washington Post, he jeapardized her operation and endangered lives; but he was not prosecuted for a crime; nor should Julian Assange. To do so sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the existence of a free press in the U.S.

Congress May Deputize Telecoms to Conduct Cyber Witch-Hunts House Bill 3261, the so-called "Stop Online Piracy Act" (SOPA), would deputize Telecoms such as Comcast and AT&T to help it police the Internet and to shut down websites without a court order and with full legal immunity. This is tantamount to giving government and its telecom cronies the power to conduct cyber-witch hunts against political opponents, competitors, and anyone else they think threatens their interests.

President Obama's Orwellian New Category of "Prolonged Detention" President Obama wants to replace "unlawful enemy combatant" in Bush's 2006 Military Commissions Act with a new system of "prolonged detention" that could conceivably keep detainees in prison into perpetuity in order to prevent crimes they have not yet committed. Add to this Obama's continuation of the Bush administration's program of warrantless spying on millions of Americans, and the recipe for abuse is chilling.

McCain/Palin Get Olbermann Censored, Bask in Media Double Standard Calling MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and Chris Mathews "incendiary," the New York Times reported the McCain/Palin campaign had filed complaints against these pundits. Subsequently, they were censored from hosting upcoming presidential debates and election night. Basking in Fox's bias coverage of Obama/Biden, such a media double standard and contempt for a free press is a chilling predictor of a possible MCCain/Palin administration

Lies, Damn Lies, and the McCain/Palin Campaign The McCain/Palin campaign has gained ground on the Obama/Biden campaign because it has successfully used chicanery and fallacious emotional appeals, well poisoning and personal attacks to manipulate and deceive more Americans into changing their minds. Unfortunately, unless Americans start demanding rational argument before endorsing a candidate, they are likely to receive more of the same once the "victor" takes office.

Hell to Pay Sen. John McCain's ideological ties to the Bush-Cheney administration have mostly passed beneath the radar of the mainstream media, but if McCain loses the presidential race to Barack Obama, his neoconservative legacy could erupt into the open with a force that should not be underestimated.

What's Cheney Up to? Dick Cheney's recent warning of a future "9-11 type" terrorist attack on the U.S. homeland was quickly dismissed by some mainstream media pundits as just another benign and misguided attempt by the former Vice President to frighten us. But perhaps he should be taken more seriously.

Corporate Media Fail to Hold Trump's Feet to Fire on Ongoing Bigotry Once Again During the ascent of Adolf Hitler to power, the U.S. media, including the New York Times, helped to paint a positive image of this demagogue. Taking a Page from the Bush Playbook The Obama administration is now considering reinstating the Military Commissions Act, in contradiction to the president's promise to end military tribunals for detainees and to close down Gitmo. The disparity between the tribunals and due process for other criminals leaves intact the concept of "unlawful enemy combatant," as contained in the act, and thus threatens further evisceration of the rule of law.

Would the White House be Able to Eavesdrop on Obama Under the FISA Bill Barack Supports? You Bet. ...all votes cast in individual precincts must pass through the phone lines on their way to be tabulated at the main tabulation center. This makes it possible to electronically reconfigure votes before they even arrive at a central tabulation point by embedding the appropriate software in the lines, thereby destroying the prospect of a fair election outcome.
