New Book Concludes: Chernobyl death toll: 985,000, mostly from cancer Book, "Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment," published by the New York Academy of Sciences, concludes that based on records now available, some 985,000 people died, mainly of cancer, as a result of the Chernobyl accident. That is between when the accident occurred in 1986 and 2004. More deaths, it projects, will follow.

Asking for Nuclear Disaster -- NRC Considers Extending Nuclear Power Plant Operating Licenses to 100 Years Nuclear power plants when they began being constructed were not seen as running for more than 40 years because of radioactivity embrittling metal parts and otherwise causing safety problems. But the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has extended the operating licenses of nuclear power plants from 40 years to 60 years and then 80 years, and is now considering 100 years. "G.M. Flaw" and the Deeply Flawed Regulatory System "U.S. Agency Knew About G.M. Flaw But Did Not Act" was the front-page headline of the New York times this week. In fact, the words "G.M. Flaw" could be substituted for by "G.E. Flaw" in its nuclear plants -- like the G.E. plants at Fukushima and the dozens of the same fault-plagued model that are still operating in the U.S., or the words could be replaced by "Pollution Caused by Fracking" or "Poisons in Food."

Nuclear-Powered Amphibious Assault Ships? Most new large U.S. Navy amphibious assault ships would be required to be nuclear powered under the National Defense Authorization Act for 2009 which the House of Representatives has passed by a vote of 384 to 23. It now goes to the Senate where many senators are uneasy about the scheme--as is the Navy and the shipbuilding industry in the U.S. Safe-energy and environmental groups are strongly critical.

Fundamental IRS Change Called For President Obama got it right and wrong when he stated, "If you've got the IRS operating in anything less than a neutral and nonpartisan way, then that is outrageous, it is contrary to our traditions." He was incorrect in saying "it is contrary to our traditions" for the IRS has for decades gone after organizations and individuals that take stands in conflict with the government at the time. Fundamental change is called for.

"Senior Official Number One, Take It Away" The U.S. press has become increasingly accepting of officials speaking anonymously. Having officials identified only as a "senior department official" or "veteran diplomat" or "high official" and the like is a way for top and lesser officials to say things without having to take any responsibility for what they say. And now U.S. officaldom apparently thinks the public can readily accept this, too.
