What should be done about nuclear waste? Kevin Kamps, radioactive waste specialist for the organization Beyond Nuclear, notes that some nuclear waste stays radioactive for millions of years. "Iodine-129 that is produced in reactors has a 15.7 million-year half-life," he points out. Iodine-129 would thus be radioactive for 314 million years. He says of nuclear waste, first, "we should stop making it."

The UN Charter, it notes, prohibits the "threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state."
