My Friend Hercules When I was young I had a quite unusual and unlikely friend. To his owner, he was called "Little Bit." To me, his caretaker and admirer, he was "Hercules."

The Civility Project Crashes and Burns The Civility Project, founded by conservative evangelical Christian Mark Dumas and Jewish liberal Lanny Davis, called on Americans to sign a "civility pledge." It was also sent to every sitting governor and member of Congress. The results were underwhelming.

Johnny Got His Gun Both Democrats and Republicans have the capacity to take away our freedoms, start the "wrong" wars, and push us off the right path. I don't intend to support either party when they attempt to do so. It's not about labels, it's about right and wrong. Dalton Trumbo's novel about the futility of unnecessary war has been hated and revered by both parties whenever it suited them.

ACLU: We're All Suspects! ACLU Action Alert: Under new FBI guidelines proposed by Attorney General Michael Mukasey, all the FBI has to do to put anybody they want under prolonged physical surveillance is assert an "authorized purpose" such as detecting or preventing crime or protecting "national security."

When your family believes false Obama rumors like 'Infanticide' One of the most frustrating things in this election campaign has been the constant stream of totally false smears against Obama. Even more frustrating is when those smears end up being believed by members of your own own family.

O'Reilly: "A Big Steaming Lump of Male Vanity" Could Bill O'Reilly have possibly chosen a worse title for his new book? How can anyone miss the obvious comical ridiculousness of that title?

Need Extra Income? Sell Your Teeth! If you're wondering how bad things will get, maybe this will give you a hint. Already, we have folks paying for prime-time spots during some of television's most-watched political commentary programs asking you to hock your choppers for some extra dough to pay the electric bill.

Let Loose the Dogs of War Obama has been accused of infanticide and called a baby killer by so many despicable Republican pundits that it is amazing anyone would be dismayed or outraged by the Sarah Palin fake pregnancy story. FOX and far-right extremists have uncorked the bottle, and now it is no-holds-barred, full-scale total war. It is time for us to loose the dogs of war.

Judge Denies Stay for Miers and Bolten District Judge John Bates handed the Bush administration another loss in its war on the Constitution and Congressional oversight yesterday. He made clear that he views the administration's claims of absolute immunity as ridiculous and not even worthy of serious consideration, calling their arguments "weak."

Michelle Obama's Empty Seats One thing that we Americans have to do is quit saying that we are in Iraq to defend America. It has nothing to do with patriotism, and it is not unpatriotic to state the obvious truth. A true patriot loves his country enough to say when his country is wrong.

Condi's Cognitive Dissonance: Redux Condoleezza Rice, on her way to a NATO meeting yesterday, showed once more her penchant for jaw-dropping hypocrisy.

McCain: You're Only Rich if You Make $5 Million a Year McCain said that if it were to be decided solely on income, "rich" would be "around $5 million." Guess that means McCain would consider someone who only makes $4 million a year to be middle class.

Condi's Cognitive Dissonance Doesn't it just blow your mind when members of the Bush administration can say something so glaringly hypocritical that it literally takes your breath away, and have absolutely no clue how it sounds coming out of their mouths?

Casting Stones While Standing Under a Boulder If McCain made propaganda videos for the North Vietnamese in a desperate attempt to avoid more agonizing torture, who among us could cast that stone? When it is completely without doubt that not one of us possesses the capability to withstand prolonged and repeated torture, it is completely without sincerity, completely without honesty to condemn someone else for being incapable of withstanding it.

The Reprehensible Republican Mind Republicans are wishing another attack on their own nation just so liberals will shut up and quit talking about the rule of law, unprovoked aggressive war in Iraq, future unprovoked aggressive war on Iran, and warrantless surveillance of Americans in the push for a total police state.

Lesser Evils Only one of two people will be elected this year, and only one is the lesser of two evils. If you throw your vote away on a third party candidate with no chance of winning, you will make absolutely no difference for whatever issues you care about. It will receive no attention other than the fact that it cost Obama the election and gave John McCain the keys to the White House and nuclear launch codes.

Rep. Lamar Smith: Idiot Extraordinaire There are many representatives in Congress who make self-satisfyingly "bold" statements that, if they had anything resembling a conscience, should cause them to hang their heads in shame. Few are quite so consistently adept at the practice as Texas Rep. Lamar Smith.
