Do You Feel Safer Now? WMD Fraud Weakens America, Cuts our Ability to Build Strong Coalitions. May be an Impeachable Offense for Bush, Cheney, DeLay.

By Rob Kall

Building military coalitions requires trust in the leaders and confidence that the claims of danger are reliable. The Bush administration 's repeated, clear statements that they had a mass of evidence of enormous supplies of WMDs have proven to be a huge lie, a fraud perpetrated upon the American people, upon the now scandal-beseiged Tony Blair, the rest of the world, and our congressional representatives. Those legislators and allies made decisions-- authorizations to go to war based on assertions now known to be baldfaced lies and fabrications aimed at supporting the neocon agenda of creating a new, imperial America.

Bush, desperate to disprove the ever more apparent lie whichcould lead to the downfall of his presidency and perhaps even his impeachment, keeps talking about the two mobile labs as proof of WMD. While that may sell to the faithful-- those who will believe ANYTHING he says, there has been enough discussion of the absence of proof that those vehicles were actually used for biological weapons. That Bush continues to demonstratively grasp at them as proof of WMDs is a sign of his desperation.

If Bush had built solid diplomatic relations with the allies the US has long held close friendships with, this might not be so bad. If Bush had not alienated and driven away so many nations, so many billions of people throughout the world who now hate and despise us, who have had their original mistrusting beliefs that George Bush, Colin Powell and Dick Cheney were lying confirmed-- then the US might not be in so weakened a position.

But here we are, facing a situation where Bush is sending literally armies of rescuers, not to save the Iraqi people from the chaos this Bush War has inflicted but to save George Bush's butt, and some are starting to say, his presidency. Any "amazing discoveries" of weapons of mass destruction found this late in the game have to be viewed as highly suspect throwdowns in a desperate effort to avoid the deserved accusations of lying, fraud, deception-- of taking the US down a primrose path that has led to what some are calling the worse scandal in ages.

John Dean,of Watergate fame, after citing a long list of how explicit Bush was in describing the WMDs,explores the impeachment potential "When the best case scenario seems to be mere incompetence, investigations certainly need to be made."

And investigations appear to be starting.

Senator and Dem presidential candidate Bob Graham, who was on the senate intelligence committee that got a chance to see the full documentationof WMD evidence said "there's been a pattern of manipulation by this administration."

Congressman Dennis Kucinich said yesterday, "This war was fraudulent. We must expose this administration." Kucinich added that when he complained about the Bush failure to find weapons of mass destruction, that someone said to him that "Saddam Hussein himself was a weapon of mass destruction." Kucinich recounted, "And I say, that's fine. They can't find him either."

The Washington Post said that senior intelligence officials reported that Vice President Cheney "browbeat" intelligence professionals to "make their assessments fit with the Bush administration's policy objectives" NY Times columnist Maureen Dowd describes Donald Rumsfield's own call for an investigation of the pre-war intelligence failure as on par with O.J. Simpson looking for his wife's killer.

Dean, who knows the history of Watergate, and the impeachment trial of Richard Nixon, only aborted because of his resignation, says, "To put it bluntly, if Bush has taken Congress and the nation into war based on bogus information, he is cooked. Manipulation or deliberate misuse of national security intelligence data, if proven, could be "a high crime" under the Constitution's impeachment clause. It would also be a violation of federal criminal law, including the broad federal anti-conspiracy statute, which renders it a felony "to defraud the United States, or any agency thereof in any manner or for any purpose."

"It's important to recall that when Richard Nixon resigned, he was about to be impeached by the House of Representatives for misusing the CIA and FBI. After Watergate, all presidents are on notice that manipulating or misusing any agency of the executive branch improperly is a serious abuse of presidential power."

When we look at recent actions through this perspective, Tom DeLay pushed for the use of the resources of the Homeland Defense program to find the Texas democrats who went on the lam to prevent passage of a flagrant gerrymandering attempt by DeLay. This use of federal resources for partisan political ends may also fit the profile of an impeachable act.

Here's the rub. Bush has already appointed over 100 judges. If they have a say in the evaluation of these proceedings, then there is less than 100% chance that justice will prevail. Since the Supreme Court will be involved, and that means involvement of Scalia or Rehnquist, who already have a history of handing the presidency to Bush, there is more risk that justice will not be served. That will leave the US with a criminal in the Whitehouse, protected by corrupt judges.

This leaves the fate of the country in the hands of the congress. Will the republican legislators face the facts that they have a bad seed in the white house, and as house majority leader? Do they have the courage to stand up to the Neocons, and do the right thing and cast this team of lying, fraud perpetrating criminals out of power and into jail where they belong? Will the military, which is run by layer after layer of neocon regime insider, actually allow the progress of impeachment hearings, or is America already at a point Sinclair Lewis described in his prophetic book, IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE, in which a corrupt president and his cronies overthrew the congress? The longer the Bush Family Saga unfolds, the more believable the IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE story seems.

To insure that the congress gets the message, a public outcry is needed. Wes Boyd and Joan Blades of Moveon-- Jerry Cohen and Duane Peterson of True Majority-- powerful leaders of the new political internet mobilization machines, should activate their millions of voices like never before to push for a speedy, resolute and tough investigation of the impeachable, treasonous crimes of the Bush administration. This is no Whitehouse intern peccaddillo we are talking about, no lie about sneaking around in Democrat files. This was massive deception and fraud leading to the deaths of hundreds of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis. It is the most outrageous con game ever played. The perpetrators deserve commensurate punishment.
