he EU will stop short of directly penalizing Putin, hoping they can entice, cajole, or force him to strike a bargain by turning his wealthy supporters against him. But, far more than Washington, the Europeans appear to believe that some sort of rapprochement is possible.

Iraq crisis: divide-and-rule in defence of a neoliberal political economy
The recent meteoric ascent of ISIS in Iraq, having been largely contained by around 2010, is closely tied to its newly acquired position in Syria. We have an economy that rewards the rich for being rich, and punishes the poor for being poor. Is it any wonder that foreigners scoff at Americans who say their country is the best in the world? Let's take the log out of our own eye before we talk about the speck in the eye of other countries.

How to Defuse the Ukraine Crisis
Incriminating footprints in Ukraine look all too familiar, from Secretary of State John Kerry's complete lack of credibility on international law to phony democrats like the National Endowment of Democracy, conservative warmongers like John McCain, and neocon interventionists like Robert Kagan and his wife Victoria Nuland, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs.

You Do Need a Weatherman to Know Which Way the Wind Blows
Once the scientists have detected changes in weather, the bigger challenge is to see if they can attribute any part of them to man-made increases in greenhouse gases. This requires sophisticated computerized models on which the scientists can simulate what the climate would be with and without those man-made increases. Its collaborators will now be able to answer questions that their science could not previously even ask.

Don't Trust Humanitarian Wars
Most Americans do not want to go to war and they do not want either the radical Shia or the radical Sunnis to win. But, fully in character, Professor Obama won't sell that understanding to his fellow citizens just in case he decides to change his mind. How do you run a democracy that way? But whoever said that American foreign policy is run democratically? At least not yet.

This Really Is Big Brother: The Leak Nobody's Noticed
s with all informant systems, especially ones that "profile" for certain behaviors deemed to be a threat to the state, only the most conformist will thrive.
