In Broward County Florida, county commissioner Stacy Ritter has taken a stand. Broward county will not pay a radio station that broadcasts Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glen Beck to run emergency broadcasts.
A Sun Sentinel article reports,
Rush Limbaugh has long been a thorn in the side of liberals, but now, because of him, some Democratic politicians don't even want to join with a local radio station to broadcast hurricane information.
Radio station WIOD, AM 610, has been the official channel for emergency information from Broward County government for the past year. The County Commission, all Democrats, balked at renewing the deal Tuesday, unable to stomach the station also being home to Limbaugh's talk show.
Commissioner Stacy Ritter said she did not want to support a station that's out of step with area politics. Ritter, a Democratic stalwart in the state Legislature before being elected to county office, cited talk shows hosted by Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and WIOD's partnership with Fox News.
"They have every right to speak, but we don't have to do business with them," she said.
Two other Broward County commissioners are supporting Ritter.
This gets interesting. Why should the big metro areas where Democratic majorities are in control give any "air" anything that helps circulation or listenership ratings for right wing stations?
Why shouldn't Democratic run cities, counties, townships place ads for jobs, announcements, etc. in left leaning media? Here where I live, where the Republicans run things, you don't get a contract with government, or a job unless you are a registered Republican.
And while we're at it, let's look at the funding that comes from the federal government. There ought to be ways to funnel money from the government to non-profits that support the left. Hell, Bush has been doing it to the tune of billions of dollars-- for churches, small businesses, oil companies, farmers...
I imagine there will be those who say this is wrong. There are a lot of things wrong. When they're all fixed, maybe this will be fixed too. But currently, the right wing is working with an incredible advantage. I'm all for what commissioner Ritter is doing. More power to her.
I'd like to see more of it happening here, where I live. Bucks county is still Republican run, though that could soon change. But Philly is 80% or more Democratic. They should be running ads in progressive newspapers. Oh, you say there aren't any? True. That should be part of the change. The hell with just giving money to right winger run, right winger friendly media. It's time for the left to get tough and that includes business. Part of the problem though, is that a lot of Democrats are right wing too. They're a part of the problem, not a part of the solution.
The left needs to be creating many more new media outlets, particularly local talk radio with local content and talk show hosts. The left needs to be supporting the existing progressive media better than it has been.
Another source for funding for progressive media should be coming from Unions and green investment orgs, like mutual funds, brokerage facilities and the like.
In additon the congress should be making sure that troops overseas all have access to progressive talk radio and TV. The US gov should be paying for that too.
Ms. Ritter is taking a tough line in Broward. She sets an example that should inspire a lot more leaders across the country to take the same approach. We applaud her.
