It has been only 48 hours since Nader’s announcement that he was running for president came out. Since then, few have rationally assessed what Nader’s run means for politics in America. Instead, many liberals and progressives have chosen to fly off the handle and engage in fearmongering---an act that they attack Republicans for doing on a daily basis.
The responses to Nader’s run can be found on Alternet, CommonDreams, OpEdNews, RAW STORY, and of course, Democratic Underground. Expletives and profanity are flying even without seriously taking into account that Nader’s run for the Green Party nomination has the Green Party seriously questioning his third party run because he has, according to them, done little to help build up the Green Party.
Why do liberals hate Ralph Nader so much and why he is he such “an unreasonable man"? Why do people think he is helping Republicans or helping McCain---not indirectly but actually has made a deal to run so they can win (like a back room deal)?
Nader's candidacy is a litmus test for Americans that shows what people are comfortable with in America.
If you are comfortable with working within the friendly confines of this two-party dictatorship run by corporations, Nader is the devil. If you are looking to break the system, Nader is, to many, a way out.
The first and foremost reason why liberals and progressives hate Nader is because he “spoiled” the election for Al Gore or “threw” the election to George W. Bush. And therefore, Nader is responsible for the past two terms we have gone through under the Bush regime.
That first reason has created a second reason---Liberals and progressives fear Nader because they believe a vote for Nader will be a vote for McCain. They assert that Nader is working for Republicans.
Comments speaking to this assumption can be found all over. In fact, these articles posted on Nader have hundreds of comments with people going crazy over Nader’s decision to run.
On a CommonDreams article detailing Nader’s announcement , more than 200 comments were made. Several comments like these were made (along with the plethora of comments in support of Nader):
The Republicans are stoked.
The Democrats are bummed.
The NaderLovers are stoked.
Well not everyone is into bombing Iran and making permanent bushscums’s tax cuts…
