It's clear that Bush and Cheney will do everything they can to thwart the will of the people, who want the US to withdraw from Iraq ASAP. They are already escalating in Iraq, without Congressional permission- an impeachable offense, as Francis Boyle points out. www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=BOY20070120&articleId=4528
The details emerging from the first week of the trial of Scooter Libby point to a high level conspiracy to out Valerie Plame as a CIA agent, masterminded by Cheney with the knowledge and assent of Bush. This is a crime under a 1982 federal law carrying a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and tens of thousand of dollars in fines. http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/012907J.shtml Surely an impeachable offense.
There are so many impeachable offenses that websites go on for pages and pages with lists of them. It is encouraging to see John Conyers, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, breaking ranks with Pelosi and starting an investigation into abuses of power by Bush with "signing statements" that override the laws passed by Congress. But Kucinich said, in answer to a question at a Barbara Lee event Saturday evening, that impeachment is still off the table because "it would interfere with stopping the war". What a pile of manure! Obviously, there will be war as long as warmongers are in power.
Congress includes many members, Democrats as well as Republicans, who look to the war corporations- Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, Bechtel, Halliburton, Carlyle- for their campaign funds and perks while in office. Will they put aside their personal interests and do what their real constituents, we the people, want? Will they use the power of the purse to cut military spending and force Bush to bring the troops home? and will they start impeachment hearings?
The American people are watching closely. We don't have much time. The war drums are pounding for hitting Iran, Syria, escalating in Iraq and Afghanistan, using nukes. As Boyle points out, World War III could start as soon as August if Bush and Cheney remain in office.
We can't wait until 2008 to vote in another president or a new Congress. If this Congress refuses to stop Bush and Cheney, what recourse do we the people have? If they ignore our letters and phone calls and emails and marches, what do we do next?
I appeal to all the lawyers who read this to give us advice. Can we recall Congress? Can we impeach members of Congress? Can we call a Constitutional Convention that overrides whatever they decide? What recourse do we have?
Perhaps the current Congress will do the right thing and open impeachment hearings soon. But if they don't, we the people need to have a new strategy prepared. What will it be?
