First, why have you decided to make the investigation into hurricane Katrina partisan? I suggest that you make the commission that will investigate what went on before and after the storm a bipartisan committee with an equal number of Republicans and Democrats as members.
Second, why did you not permit Democrats to offer amendments to the Hurricane Katrina relief bill? You say that you are trying to be fair, and yet your actions speak louder than your words. By alienating Democrats from the process you have created an atmosphere of partisanship. I would like to suggest that in the future you open up government to both parties.
While I am on my soapbox, I'd like to also make some recommendations to the Democrats. The tactic that you used earlier this year to prevent the Republicans from running roughshod over the ethics committee needs to be put in place now with respect to the Katrina investigation. This investigation must be bipartisan. Anything less will result in a whitewashing of the entire matter.
The blame game is in full swing. The Republicans are pointing fingers at everybody but themselves. The Democrats are pointing fingers at the Federal government. America needs to know the truth. That truth is going to hurt. People will need to be held accountable for their actions and inactions.
In this case, the first responders who did their job regardless of the political fallout are the only ones who deserve the Medal of Freedom.
