  Details   DMCA

President Donald Trump faces an exceedingly narrow path to re-election in 2020. In order to beat him, the Democratic nominee only needs to pick up 38 electoral votes. With more than 100 electoral votes in play in states that Trump won narrowly in 2016 -- especially Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Florida -- all the Democrats have to do is pick a nominee ever so slightly more popular than Hillary Clinton.

That's a low bar that the Democratic National Committee seems determined, once again, to not get over. As in 2016, the DNC is putting its finger on the scale in favor of "establishment" candidates, the sentiments of the rank and file be damned.

Last time, the main victim was Bernie Sanders. This time, it's Tulsi Gabbard.

Michael Tracey delivers the gory details in a column at RealClearPolitics. Here's the short version:

By selectively disqualifying polls in which Gabbard (a US Representative from Hawaii) performs above the 2% threshold for inclusion in the next round of primary debates, the DNC is trying to exclude her while including candidates with much lower polling and fundraising numbers.

Why doesn't the DNC want Gabbard in the debates? Two reasons come to mind.

Firstly, her marquee issue is foreign policy. She thinks the US should be less militarily adventurous abroad, and as an army veteran of the post-9/11 round of American military interventions in the Middle East and Central Asia, she's got the credentials to make her points stick.

Foreign policy is a weak spot for the increasingly hawkish Democratic establishment in general and the front-runner and current establishment pick, former vice-president Joe Biden, in particular. As a Senator, Biden voted to approve the ill-fated US invasion of Iraq. As vice-president, he supported President Barack Obama's extension of the war in Afghanistan and Obama's ham-handed interventions in Libya, Syria, and other countries where the US had no business meddling. The party's leaders would rather not talk about foreign policy at all and if they have to talk about it they don't want candidates coloring outside simplistic "Russia and China bad" lines.

Secondly, Gabbard damaged -- probably fatally -- the establishment's pre-Biden pick, US Senator Kamala Harris, by pointing out Harris's disgusting authoritarian record as California's attorney general. Gabbard knows how to land a punch, and the DNC doesn't want any more surprises. They're looking for a coronation, not a contest.

If the DNC has its way, next year's primaries will simply ratify the establishment pick, probably a Joe Biden / Elizabeth Warren ticket, without a bunch of fuss and argument.

And if that happens, the Democratic Party will face the same problem it faced in 2016: The rank and file may not be very motivated to turn off their televisions and go vote.

Whatever their failings, rank and file Democrats seem to like ... well, democracy. They want to pick their party's nominees, not have those nominees picked for them in advance. Can't say I blame them.

Nor will I blame them for not voting -- or voting Libertarian -- if the DNC ignores them and limits their choices yet again.

Thanks for pointing this out to OEN readers. I had read the TRCP article and was not surprised. We knew this was coming. Gabbard needs the exposure from these debates to get her "it's the military, stupid" message out and the war mongering democratic party is all in on preventing that. Yet desite the uphill battle, after the dems coronate one of their dipshit clowns, she should run as an independent. She will need to engender the support of some of the billionires who yearn for an end to the war economy and see Gabard as the logical dragon slayer. If she can pull that off and create a reasonable war chest, I still think that - considering her appeal to disappointed Trump voters, deserters from the democratic party, libertarians and antiestablishment types in general - she culd galvanize a sufficiently massive voter block to win.

Third party candidates are good for Democracy a expose issues that mainstream media does not cover. BUT, in practice, a Gabbard run would take votes from the democrats more than from the solid block behind Trump, thereby ensuring his re-election.

I hope she is in the debates and raises legitimate questions but do not support her running as independent.

She could be secretary of peace as this position is long overdue.

Really? And which of the clowns from the DNC sideshow would you prefer over Trump? Harris, the deep state courtesan whose career coud be showcased on the TV series Scandal? Biden, the most enthusiastic cheerleader of American exceptionalism since Ronald Reagan? Warren, the granny state matron who will have us living in a poitically correct staright jacket while the wars continue? Sanders, the quisling drowning in his own spittle from shouting "It's the billionaires!" while playing the roles of all three monkeeys of Toshogu when grilled on his foreign policy views.

Of the four most important issues in the world, each of those miscreants will prove to be worse. As president, they will allow, no - increase, MIC murders around the world, exacerbate the threat of nuclear war against Russia, camouflage the truth that the greatest purveyor of environemental damage is the US and continue the destruction of the world's agrarian infrastructure, incubating more mass refugee diasporas from the developing world.

No, Crispy, they are all neocon functionaries and neoliberal boot lickers. At least Trump occasionally has a microsecond of temporary lucidity tweeting things like "why kill people in Syria when we should use that money to fix our roads?" that show that he may be socially immoral, but at least he's not politially amoral like 99% of the democrats.

So, it's Gabbard or bust.

I wouldn't give the punk ass Trump any cred at this point. If he thinks the Transnationals are going to forget the heartburn he gave them at the start which subsequently slowed them down a step, he is a in the grave mistake. Think what he could have done if he had asked for the "peoples" help. The elites are about to trash him and bring in a new team.

I personally know some Libertarians who are changing their voter registrations to vote for Gabbard in the Democratic primary. And even among hardcore partisan Libertarians, I could see some voting Democrat if she was the nominee.

Personally, the last time I voted for a Democrat for president was 1988 and I don't plan to start again (I've never voted Republican for president). But I do think that Gabbard deserves to be heard.

There's some talk that the Democratic "peace candidate" in the 2016 Democratic primaries, Lincoln Chafee, may seek the Libertarian Party's 2020 nomination (he moved from Rhode Island to Wyoming and left the Democratic Party earlier this year). As a strongly partisan Libertarian, I think the Libertarian Party should stop nominating other parties' retreads, but if we're going to, I'd rather it be a former Democrat for once.

I just read the Simon's article and it confirms what I knew. Absent though is DEF CON testing of election systems (as a whole, not just the voting machine - I assume.)

In 2018 for ex, a replica of the Fl system was broken into in less than 30 min by kids 15 and younger. An 11 YO broke into the system in less than 10 min!
Vote flipping was a piece of cake after that.

This was also demonstrated many times by professors in various universities in the past (Stanford and others.) but kids doing it shows once more that it is easy and purposely kept that way.

The DNC and other elites of the Democratic Party will continue to do whatever their owners, the 1%, tell them to do. That will necessarily include weeding out any and all progressive forces in the party. I can't get excited about Gabbard because of her anti-BDS position. However, I would consider voting for her if she manages to get on the ballot. I did not vote for Hillary and will not vote for any of the establishment politicians. The party elites really don't care that much whether the party is successful as long as they can manage to get elected and keep their bribe money coming in.

Of course the Democrats will fail, as long as the "faithful" can read and understand pigeon English. I am disgusted with both parties. Since I am unable to vote due to the fact that Democrats blocked third party candidates from the ballot in my state, I say good riddance to their worthless boils on the butt of America.

The biggest challenge / problem that Gabbard faces is convincing the voters that she can in fact serve two masters. The military vote is massive (both active duty and retirees). She has to convince both groups, plus their families and friends, that she is not going to make any cuts to veterans programs since she is basically turning her back on the military. As a veteran, I can't say that I trust her in that area. She may very well be able to think on her feet. However, if elected she could very well be inheriting a Republican Senate which will make sure she has a tough row to hoe. Personally, I don't put much faith in any promises that a candidate makes. Their primary concern is to get elected. Once elected, all hell can break loose. A Department of Peace appeals only to progressives and libertarians, not the majority of voters. America is not ready for an elected official who is going to be soft on defense or immigration. Gabbard has to appeal to a lot of different beliefs. That is a tough position to be in. Seems like the Hawks are and have been, much stronger than the Doves.

The public is far less hawkish than you believe, Old Codger. For example, part of Trump's attraction was his commitmnent to end interventions. Gabbard is all bouat nonintervention. I'm also a veteran and I have zero concern that she will cut back on veterans benefits. Stop micro-analyzing. We have never had such an anitinterventionist candidate in our lifetime. You may prefer wiating in your rocker for the 100% perfect cnadidate, but the victims of our foreign policy don't have that luxury.

Not wanting to send troops to fight these nonsense regime change wars is not turning her back on the military. Her vote to increase the military budget was primarily due to an increase in troops and veterans benefits.

I believe Gabbard is the only candidate who in fact does what she says or feels is correct. Her resignation from the DNC's #2 position in 2016 is an example. She knew she would lose any future backing by this group, but did so unlike Elizabeth Warren, the "new darling" of the DNC, who endorsed Hillary even though their views were at 180 degrees. That is a dangerous one to have in the White House.

We all know that any candidate will not get through all they propose, but I feel Gabbard is the one who will fight the hardest for what she feels is right.

After 2020 turns out to be a rerun of 2016, MAYBE then people will finally decide the only way to change course electorally is to vote Green. It really boggles the mind how easily the press steers people away from the Green Party considering how closely our platform follows polling results. We are what the public says it wants. So vote that way and stop being fear mongered into voting against your own interests. Our lives depend on it.

I agree with you about the Greens and have voted for Jil and the Greens in the past two elections. But I'm sure you know that the problem is they cannot get on TV, so they have no chance. You can't expect millions of voters to vote for a party or candidate they never heard of. For exampl, they never heard of Gabbard, but after only two TV debates she has pulled over 6% in some polls. If she were to stay in the debates, she would see those numbers expand exponentially. You have to be seen to be heard. That is the unfortunate reality.

The problem I have with Tulsi is she is not as antiwar as people think. She supports the phony war on terror. She is also friendly with right wing leader of India Mosi. And that is even too far left for the Dems demonstrating just how far to the right they have gone. If people keep voting lesser evil, we are doomed.

Lois, it's not about lesser "evil," it's about backing a candidate who for the FIRST TIME is making the conection between imperialism and taxpayer financing. Her prioritizing anti-regime change is a major step forward in the right direction. The Mosi bullshit is irrelevant and should have no bearing on helping Gabbard get her message message out. And she has spread that message wider in two months than the Greens have been able to do in two decades.

Somtimes you just have to back cold, hard strategy and be realistic. We all love the Greens, but it is about ending regime change and they are not capable of doing anything about that. More importantly he victims of regime change don't have the luxury to wait for the Greens to catch on or some Jesus-like perfect candidate to appear, which - unfortuantely - will never happen anyway I hate to tell you.

Tulsi was a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and has met with leaders of India to promote trade, tourism and information technology, as well as defense and counter terrorism

Tulsi also met with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi

  • Their meeting focused on enhanced cooperation in the fight against terrorism, working together to protect the environment, and maximizing economic opportunities between the two countries
  • Tulsi's meeting with Modi was part of her Congressional responsibilities as a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee
  • Tulsi follows the spirit of Aloha which means that she is open to understanding the viewpoints of diverse leaders. Prime Minister Modi is a democratically elected leader of the world's largest democracy. India is an important regional military and economic power.

There are ways other than sending troops to fight terrorists. Tulsi has proposed a bill making it illegal to send weapons or training to terrorist groups which is a method of fighting terror. She would also want to make diplomatic negotiations with terrorist leaders. I firmly believe she would do all in her power to not use our troops as chess pieces as is being done presently.

After 2020 may be too late. With the DNC choices of Biden and Warren, after Harris was exposed for what she is, the DNC will make the same mistake they did in 2016 and choose their candidate rather than who the people want. The Democrat Party has lost their interest in the voter, kneeling to the corporate interests who are buying them.

The DNC is once again forcing their choice on the people as they are manipulating what, IMHO, is the strongest candidate in the field, Tulsi Gabbard. The truth is they know this as well and that is why they have called out to all MSM to either silence or smear her every change they get. They cannot allow her word to get out.

It really comes down to when will the people get tired of fraud. In fact that should be some candidate's theme...Fraud, fraud everywhere doesn't anyone care? Then start the litany of the fraud and their fraudsters. I think folks are tired of the fraudsters. Problem is they've ripped the dollar to shreds and quantitatively eased the world into the toilet so that nothing is left. Such a candidate might also talk about reconfiscating US gold and putting it under the control of the people. Could be a deadly act but we all have to go sometime. Let's go down taking our stuff back and kicking the transnationals into space.

Howie Hawkins who is running for the Green Party nomination will incorporate public banks into his Green New Deal. Just put the damn private banking cartel out of business just like the private health insurance companies. The public has been shunted aside by both corporate parties. The only way we are going to regain control over our own lives is by electing the Greens or national strike. No Democrat will do it. I promise.

"Let's go down taking our stuff back ..."

Yup, my insightful friend. On the money!

Here's Phase One of the plan. Because the DOD budget represents the biggest chunk of discretional spending and our endless wars represent the biggest fraud promoted by imperial madmen in history.

Why would anyone dismiss this as folly? It's the beginning of a PEOPLE'S REVOLUTION!

I did vote Jill Stein in 2016. Best candidate going. I believe it defies a democracy to not let the public know the candidates, regardless of party. The two the MSM lets the people know about are endeared to corporate interests, the others are not.

I hear where the DNC paid The Young Turks a rather sizeable sum. I imagine that is why they are really smearing Tulsi Gabbard.

We need to encourage more people to vote Green. That takes more votes away the Democrats, which is needed to ensure that Trump gets re-elected.

By now, one would think that y'all would have realized that the Greens are not going to be able to win a presidential election. Republicans don't have to worry about any progressives winning any thing beyond ridicule from Trump. In both scenarios, you can thank the DNC, bless their hearts.

After Trump, you can be assured that Democrats are going to be more radical in the election messages that they put out there for the voters consumption. Not surprising is that newly elected officials are pushing hard for impeachment proceedings to begin. To them, not fully understanding how the voters actually think, they think that impeachment is a Golden Egg for the Democrats.

Trump won primarily by getting voters to believe he was "anti-establishment", no more "political correctness" if he became the president - his "drain the swamp" caught on "like wildfire", his "crooked Hillary", "worked like a charm", and his MAGA campaign slogan convinced the voters let's "give him a try". Biden ("Looming Catastrophe") is entwined in "the establishment label" having zero chance of "pulling off a win" and Warren, having no real executive experience to lead, except for the "big promises" she's making if she's elected president, "on day one", are "simply no match for Trump" and the DNC would be giving Trump "an easy win" and a "second term". However, one of the new Democrat Senators might possibly "send Trump pack'in" - that would be Sen Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) who "swamped" her Republican challenger Rep Martha McSally (R-AZ) in a "Red State" for the retiring Senator Jeff Flake's (R-AZ) seat in 2018. Sinema proved she can win in a "Red State" and she is staunchly "independent" and America "may be ready" for some "independence" instead of "Party Line Politics" with "Sinema For President". Sen Sinema's first speech in the Senate recalling the remarkable life of Sen John McCain and her steady work on behalf of all "veterans". Yes, Obama, a new Democrat Senator, suddenly "appeared on the scene" and was elected President.

Dang Lance! Don't get hoodwinked brother. "Sen Sinema's first speech in the Senate recalling the remarkable life of Sen John McCain and her steady work on behalf of all "veterans".

Recalling the remarkable life of Sen John McCain...And her steady work on behalf of all veterans??

You can't petition the lawd with remarkable bullshit!!

Did you ever hear him say, comeon brother, put your hands together and let's try to love one another, right now!? f*ck no.

What a hodgepodge of incongruence!

We don't need no stinking adulation of a war criminal. The only remarkable thing about this Keating Five crook was his unfailing willingness to support death and destruction and engage in photo ops with terrorists half way around the world on behalf of the transnationals...oops, I guess that isn't so remarkable after all.

Yes, "whoever" the DNC "decides on", for sure "The Donald" is going to "dig up all the muck raking" he possibly can on his Democrat opponent and "run with it" all the way to the ballot box" in 2020 - all of the DNC "established candidates" have "something, anything will do" for Trump to "smear 'em up". However, #thefed (if Trump "truly wants to fix the economy he must shut down the Federal Reserve and start issuing debt-free money") may have already destroyed Trump's reelection bid with their nine interest rates hikes in Trump's first three years thereby assuring turmoil in the stock market, and looming recession, intensified trade wars, and a president openly and publicly bamboozling Fed Chairman Powell" to his heart's content". Apparently, Trump has put on some weight, his calcium score is up and his age is "creeping up" on him - he may "tire himself out" with all his "tweets" before the actual voting comes up - do the voters really want "a tweeting president", so "full of anger and rage" against anyone he doesn't approve of "? #BiggestFollies

I agree, and it pains me to do so that Sanders is probably the best best choice the Democrats have. Of course, he won't be given the chance, so my pain is somewhat alleviated. With Gabbard and Harris, the Democrats have a couple of "statement" candidates to prove they're "inclusive". It will present a conundrum for the nomination committee who will be facing the need to nominate the potential first female president. Which one they are willing to throw under the bus remains to be seen. Or, how much money can the Democrats raise?

Will the Democrats pass up the chance to nominate a female with either a native American or black heritage,? I posit that is not likely. Of course, waiting in the wings is Trump who will surely find plenty of insults to toss out. Important fact to remember is the predictable response and ravings will only further convince his supporters that Democrats have a superiority complex.

Who will win the nomination contest? I'm putting money on a female. Most likely it will be Harris because she has proven that she can be controlled. Gabbard is too much of a wild card; too independent. Sanders is too independent and past his prime. Biden of course could be - but that could signal the demise of the Democratic party.

This article is quite wrong about Biden. It says, " As vice-president, he supported President Barack Obama's extension of the war in Afghanistan." Bob Woodward's book Obama's Wars clearly describes how Biden was the pacifist voice in the Obama administration. He opposed escalation in Afghanistan. In contrast, Hillary was the hawkish voice. There are many problems with Biden. Being a hawk is not one of them.

Feel free to point out that time Biden publicly condemned Obama's wars and/or resigned over them.

Been a democrat all my life. Democrats are really stupid. To .e it seems the DNC and Biden are doi g the exact same thing Hilliary did and it disgusts me. I've been intrigued by Tulsi but pretty much had my allegiance to Warren. If Biden does get the nod I think Harris will be the #2. I wasn't aware the DNC was AGAIN RIGGING THINGS. Just unbelievable. May be too late but now want to give Tulsi a boost. I contributed to her after reading this even though its poll numbers she needs. But we can still support her until the following debate. Her message really exposes the corruption and we need it.

"Will the DNC Snatch Defeat from the Jaws of Victory Yet Again?"

This is a rhetorical question. Pictured here is the weapon the establishment Democrats will take into battle November 2020.

The DNC is proving to be anything but "democratic" as they completely ignore what the people want for a candidate. It became to be glaring in 2016 with their proposed coronation of Hillary over Sanders.

The 2020 election is even more telling as their paid-for cohorts, CNN, MSNBC, NYT, WaPo, etc. began this cycle with smears of individuals the DNC felt would challenge their puppets.

Rather than running on any issues the voting public show interest in the DNC's main consideration is getting their chosen one in. Their initial chosen one was Kamala Harris who is a Hillary 2.0 in personal characteristics, plus her sister was an adviser to Hillary in 2016, thus making her "well equipped". The DNC brought in Biden to "take the heat" initially while Harris could gain traction with the populace.

Things were working early on as Biden showed well in the polls while Harris was gaining traction, but it only took 90 seconds for Harris' bubble to burst to show how frail the DNC warlords are in their ability to choose candidates.

Enter Warren as the new "glory girl" for the DNC and a major problem for the voters in 2019 as Warren is so manipulable Trump will play with her as one does with play-do, leaving the only two who could beat Trump on the sidelines and having to pay the price of a Trump for the next 4 years.
