When Will an Anders Breivik Norwegian massacre of children, or of a group of left leaning people-- Muslims, Jews, a conference for progressives, or a school in a liberal area happen?
We'e already seen a synagogue attacked. But I'm a firm believer in Rupert Sheldrakes morphogenic field theory-- the more something happens in the universe, the more it potentiates that happening again. We will be seeing more white extremist home-brewed terrorists attacking ideological targets because they've been inspired by Breivik and now the sick fucks who perpetrated the act of terrorism in New Zealand. This horrible atrocity makes it clear that no nation is safe. But with bigotry and hate baiting Donald Trump, Americans are particularly vulnerable to more such acts.
How do we handle this? First thing is to not remain silent when you encounter racism, bigotry and hate. If someone makes a lame joke that has even a tinge of racism or hate, call them out. This is not easy. People will deny they are being racist or anti-semitic. And yes, I know that Zionists are abusing the anti-semitism accusation, which is disgusting politicization. But try to differentiate and call out people who talk about "cheap jews" or "jewing someone down."
If you see what looks like hate speech online, call it out or flag it. Social media sites are really responding to hate speech and blocking people who post hate speech. I know it works.
These are bottom-up bandaids that can help. But we also need top-down answers. We need leaders who set examples of tolerance and inclusion. That's not happening now, when Trump and his supporters in congress are working to increase intolerance and build walls-- physical ones and walls in people's minds and hearts.
