Stories matter. That's the premise behind National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), which began in 1999, and repeats annually in November.

Additional programs include the Young Writers Program , Come Write In , and the "Now What?" Months .

Camp NaNoWriMo, in April and July, annually, is specifically designed for open-ended writing, including scripts and poetry.

431,626 participants participated in NaNoWriMo in 2015, including 80,137 students and educators in the associated Young Writers' Program. Over a thousand libraries, bookstores, and community centers participated in the Come Write In program last year.
