Caricature of Russian President Vladimir Putin
Ukraine isn't the center of the universe but it surely is the center of political turmoil that could unravel into something far larger.
The civil war in Syria is far worse in terms of civilian dead and hundreds of thousands displaced while thousands of different jihadi extremists not only fight against the government of Bashar Assad but also against the Free Syrian Army (FRA), the indigenous Syrian group that initially protested and took up arms against Assad some three years ago. Thus far at least that civil war though not entirely contained within Syria-with Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan taking in Syrian refugees along with some of those countries supplying their own Sunni and/or Shiite fighters joining the war- has thus far remained within the Middle East. Now with Assad agreeing to give up his chemical weapons and getting the upper hand against the non indigenous extremists the civil war is less likely to erupt into a larger conflagration.
Yet Syria is instructive in this way: It has unraveled into the current civil war primarily because of outside interference in the form of Saudi Arabia and Turkey supplying arms to the non-indigenous mostly Sunni extremist jihadis along with US bungling, Obama's "red line" threats to bomb Syria over last Augusts' poison gas attacks-and the disinformation provided to the corporate media that Assad was behind the attacks-all of which has been summarily exposed as false by the investigative reporting of Seymour M. Hersh in "The London Review of Books" [i] and so ably reported by Michael Collins in his piece "Seymour Hersh Does It Again! Killing in the name of", OPEDNEWS, April 7, 2014.
Hersh uncovers the chicanery behind who was behind the Sarin gas attacks in Syria-Erdogan of Turkey supplying the Sarin to the al-Nasra Front rebels that sent in the chemically laced rockets that killed innocent, Syrian residents. And certainly not the false Obama administrations account definitely accusing Assad- which the corporate media dutifully reported as fact simply relying on the administrations account-which is reminiscent of the Bush administration cherry picking intelligence to fit policy prior to Dubya initiating the war in Iraq.
But getting back to Ukraine and particularly what's happening in the eastern Ukraine cities of Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv.
The western corporate media depicts the protests and demonstrations in these cities- the takeover of administrative buildings, erecting barricades of tires and barbed wire-as perpetrated by pro-Russian separatists and provocateurs.
We got this yesterday from Secretary of State John Kerry speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, "Everything that we've seen in the past 48 hours from Russian provocateurs and agents operating in eastern Ukraine tells us that they've been sent there determined to create chaos. No one is fooled by what could potentially be a contrived pretext for military intervention, just as we saw in Crimea." Ah, John where's the clear cut evidence- oh it's classified- so as usual we're expected to accept these accusations on faith.
Yet this is typical, overblown, old cold war type "red" baiting rhetoric by the US government aimed at fomenting hysteria and blaming Putin and Russia behind the turmoil in Ukraine. Of course what's not mentioned is ethnic Russian people in eastern Ukraine may actually feel the "new" government in Kiev is neo Nazi fascist, illegal, the result of a coup, is unelected, doesn't represent them and that they legitimately want a referendum to secede from Ukraine and join Russia as their counterparts in Crimea were able to achieve.
But why should anyone believe Kerry, anyone in and around the Obama administration or their corporate media shills when their words are propaganda, disinformation, cherry picking intelligence to suit its ends and outright lies.
They depicted the coup of President Viktor Yanukovych as his fleeing the country because of legitimate protests rather than the actual violent coup that was fomented by the neo-Nazi "Right Sector" ultra nationalists who were behind the sniper attacks that killed supposed allied protesters and police. Throw in the behind the scenes machinations of Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland getting her hand picked Arseniy Yatsenyuk "appointed" as Ukraine's un-elected prime minister and it has all the earmarks of a US pre-planned, inspired overthrow.
Then of course there was the popular referendum held on March 16 by the Crimea people voting to join Russia which the West and its media shills depicted as illegitimate, against international law and against Putin and Russia for illegally annexing it.
And lastly, though Russia insists it is conducting long planned military exercises on its soil the West points to it as getting ready to invade eastern Ukraine or some NATO Baltic country even while Russia reiterates daily it has no intention to go in that direction-as if Putin is the reincarnation of Hitler annexing the Sudetenland of then Czechoslovakia and annexing Austria into Third Reich Germany in the 1930's.
As for provocateurs inciting political unrest, the CIA and its surrogate private contractors are well versed slipping into legitimate, otherwise peaceful protests, initiating violent confrontations that provoke the authorities to overreact and creating chaos. Then with calculated misinformation and propaganda supplied to the compliant corporate media blame the resulting turmoil on whatever opposing side the US government decides is the "enemy".
