Donald Trump is getting a lot of flack for observing that there might be riots if he goes to the GOP convention with the most votes and then the powers that be give it to someone else.

He is being attacked by liberals and conservatives, who complain that he is irresponsible, even dangerous.

The truth is, he is right. He has energized a massive populist movement of angry anti-establishment supporters. If the GOP establishment rejects their bottom up, democratically elected candidate, they will be furious. They've already shown a proclivity for aggression at Trump rallies. It is not unrealistic to predict that there will be a strong, angry response if the will of the people is thwarted. I would hope that the protests would be peaceful, but Trump's encouragement of other acts of violence suggests that there would be violent rioting, with property damage and possible human injury or suffering.

I would go further and say that on the other side of the aisle Bernie Sanders supporters already have enough reason, given the bad faith behavior of the Democratic leadership for protest actions. I'm not talking about violent riots, but certainly protests, including civil disobedience.

I would go so far as to say that if it's possible to identify targets now that represent the DNC, that activists would be justified in holding protests, not riots, but protests. The Democracy Spring is a long planned event. I would be shocked if there are not protests in both national convention cities-- Cleveland and Philadelphia. Folks like Dan Rather have suggested that the violence we're seeing in 2016 is the most since the 1968 elections.

Whether Bernie Sanders wins or not, the DNC is awful as it is currently run and deserves to be the recipient of peaceful protests.

While I agree with Trump that there could be riots, if there is violence, I would hold Trump to blame, not for mentioning riots, but for his drumbeat of statements and outbursts supporting and encouraging violence.

One thing that is likely. If there are protests, the police will over-react. They just about always do.
