Trump Assassinates Iran's War Hero, Risking All-out War

The US has admitted to assassinating Iran's most beloved military leader, General Qassem Soleimani, in a drone strike which seems very likely to ignite a full-scale war. Six others are also reported killed, including Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

According to the Pentagon, Trump personally ordered the assassination. I'll keep following this hugely important story and will probably be writing a lot about it as it unfolds. I encourage everyone who values peace and humanity to follow it as well.

"Spoke to a very knowledgeable person about what Iran's response to Soleimani's assassination might be," The Quincy Institute's Trita Parsi tweeted regarding this developing story. "This would be the equivalent of Iran assassinating Petreus or Mattis, I argued. No, he responded, this is much bigger than that." Pentagon out with a statement on the airstrike. "This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans. The United States will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world."

pic.twitter.com/W1L8ymqScd - Grace Segers (@Grace_Segers) January 3, 2020 "Most Americans won't understand the gravity of this," tweeted journalist Rania Khalek. "Qasem Soleimani is head of the Iranian IRGC's elite Quds Force, which conducts operations outside of Iran in both Iraq and Syria. He was credited with helping turn the tide in both countries against Al-Qaeda and ISIS."

"This is very serious," Khalek added. "The US essentially declared war on Iran by assassinating its most revered military figure in Iraq. And by also killing the head of the PMF, the US created more enemies in Iraq. There will be regional retaliation.

It's unlikely it can be prevented." "If true, It is not an understatement to say this could change the entire Middle East," tweeted Rising's Saagar Enjeti. "There's going to be that war now that people have been pushing for since tanking the Iran Deal," tweeted The Intercept's Murtaza Mohammad Hussain.

"If this is true, the US has effectively declared war on Iran, which has established militarily ties with Russia and China. It's not hyperbole to say this could start WW3. Insane," tweeted Grayzone's Dan Cohen, who also highlighted the important fact that "Iran, Russia and China held joint naval drills less than a week ago." "Iranian sources in Iran are warning that killing Gen. Qasem Sulaimani spells war," tweeted Farnaz Fassihi of The New York Times. "'Official reaction will begin with a strike,' one says."

A proportionate retaliatory strike would necessarily entail an attack on US military targets, or the military targets of US allies. If that happens, either the empire stands down or we're looking at an all-out war of a size that is potentially almost limitless. Iranian sources in Iran are warning that killing Gen. Qasem Sulaimani spells war.

"Official reaction will begin with a strike," one says.#Iraq - Farnaz Fassihi (@farnazfassihi) January 3, 2020 Months after Donald Trump took office it was reported that the CIA had escalated covert operations in Iran, and the administration has been escalating tensions with that nation further and further ever since it announced its withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 on completely false pretenses. The withdrawal was followed by waves of debilitating, civilian-starving sanctions implemented with the goal of provoking civil unrest, a goal Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has openly admitted. From there we saw increased US military presence in the region, then the Iraqi-killing airstrikes earlier this week and the resulting tense angry standoff at the US embassy in Baghdad, and now here we are with Iran planning retaliation for an unforgivable assassination on its most senior and revered military official.

Many are understandably claiming that this geostrategically pivotal confrontation was precisely what Trump was installed to facilitate all along. The largest donor to any campaign in 2016 was oligarch Sheldon Adelson, who gave $25 million to the Trump campaign, and who in 2013 said that the US should drop a nuclear bomb on Iran. After Trump's election win, Adelson gave another $5 million to his inauguration, the largest single presidential inaugural donation ever made. Newt Gingrich, another of the billionaire's hired politicians, has said that Adelson's "central value" is Israel. Make no mistake, Iran is not Iraq or Libya.

A full-scale war against Iran would be many times more deadly, costly and destabilizing than those interventions; the UK's Admiral Lord West told The Daily Star Online last year that winning such a war would require no less than a million troops, or nearly the total number of active duty US military personnel in the entire world. Even if a direct war with Iran didn't lead to a confrontation with China, Russia and the other unabsorbed allies, it would still be worse than Vietnam and Iraq combined in terms of death, destruction, expense, and regional destabilization. Last year Lord Admiral West warned that the US would need no fewer than a million troops to win a war with Iran, almost the number of total active-duty US military personnel in the whole world.

Even if this doesn't become WW3, it would still be worse than Vietnam + Iraq. o/UKuNxwvfqH - Caitlin Johnstone ⏳ (@caitoz) January 3, 2020

And now, as I sit as the mother of two teenagers watching what might be a third world war looming on the horizon, all I can think is about how infuriating it is that we've spent the last three years on Russia bullshit and sectarian political infighting instead of building an actual cohesive antiwar movement and pushing real opposition to Trump's warmongering. Let's get it together, humans. We need big changes, and we need them yesterday. ________________________________

IMPORTANT: For many Iranians Qassem Soleimani was a warmonger who caused massive casualties in Syria. He was no hero to average Iranians who chanted against the country's support for Hezbollah and Hamas

Ms Nan, is that you? I found both these links puzzling coming from you. However

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard on Friday said President Trump violated the U.S. Constitution with an "act of war" in the targeted killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

"This was very clearly an act of war by this president without any kind of authorization or declaration of war from Congress, clearly violating the Constitution," the Hawaii Democrat and 2020 presidential candidate said.

"It further escalates this tit-for-tat that's going on and on and on, will elicit a very serious response from Iran and [push] us deeper and deeper into this quagmire, and it really begs the question, for what?"

Ms. Gabbard, a veteran of the Iraq War, has consistently warned against U.S. military involvement in the Middle East.

"I've said for a long time that going to war with Iran would make the war in Iraq and even Afghanistan look like a picnic," she said. "There has been no declaration of war against Iran, and I think that's a really important point."

The Defense Department confirmed Thursday that, at the direction of Mr. Trump, the U.S. military killed Soleimani, the head of the elite Quds force.

The Pentagon characterized the move as a "defensive action" to protect U.S. personnel abroad.

I agree it's a serious situation. I'm not going to start hyperventilating yet. People here have been screaming Armageddon everytime a "potential" crises arises since Trump has been in the WH. The planet is still here folks.

From Trump's track record so far (not involving us in new wars) I'm going to trust him that he knows what he is doing. Cue hysterical insults.

The liberal media in lockstep with Congress, with assistance from nefarious hidden entities, is going overboard in defense of Iran and this mass murderer. Iran/Ayatollahs have been controlling much of what has been going on behind the scenes in the ME for decades now.

As far as Congresses approval pppttt! They would stall the vote because it's Trump. We'd have another Benghazi. The attack on the embassy was an act of war. Trump would be damned if he did, and damned if he didn't respond.

I did not expect this from you. Your mockery of an act that amounts to igniting a war of potentially unspeakable consequences is both reckless and unconscionable.

No individual or political fervor deserves unflinching support in the face of such an outrage. If you think this will pass away as another storm in a teacup, you have forgotten the recent past. WWI was started by the assassination of one man, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. One of the deadliest conflicts in history, it involved over 100 countries across all continents. 20-22 million lives were lost and an equal number were wounded and maimed. The war cut a swathe of destruction across the face of the world. And it was all fought with weapons that were a parody of today's arsenal of mass destruction. In the hands of leaders lacking in character, integrity, moral fiber and conscience.

What makes you think people who fear a similar outcome from this action by Trump are hysterical cowards hiding under their desks from scarecrows? To flip it, what gives you the courage to think you are immune to the consequences? Because you are untouchable by faraway Iran? Because America is numero uno when it comes to warmongering and savagery against other peoples? Because your media is cooing soothing lullabies in your ears that are louder than war drums?

And even if Americans are 'safe' on their soil, what about the poor benighted millions in that part of the world? They have been gored, trampled and crushed for nearly two decades in endless revenge for a false flag operation that took an infinitesimal fraction of the lives they lost because they are just 'those others'. Placing them in a new mortal danger does not matter so long as Americans are safe?

Really, this and your other comments below sadden me immensely. If this is the mindset of the all weather faithful to Trump the man, it is a tragic commentary on the extent to which they have been blinded to their humanity.

I'm not as eloquent as you Ramanii, and I'm not even going to try. The only thing I will apologize for is the video making fun of the reactions to a terrorist being assassinated. Everyone, myself included, has been well conditioned by TPTB that have been in control since before most were born to respond in the way most have. People can't help it. They're chained to the reality created for them.

I also believe people cling to those chains in fear of the unknown when the chains are being broken as I believe they are now. I for one am not going to be chained to the past in fear of what a new reality represents.

People here have been conditioned by MSM to think Trump is an idiot and doesn't know what he's doing. It's still a free country and I have the right to disagree.

Trump's words "We took action last night to stop a war. We did not take action to start a war."

Time will tell who's right, wrong, or somewhere in between. I'm going to leave it at that.

Ms Nan, for 2 cents worth of input, I must insist that I don't believe this has been Trump's decision. I feel that he was lied into this by our State Dept/Deep State/CIA complex or he was forced into it by other means I dare not suggest.

You are right of course. However, the essence of your comment reminds me of the French, German and US governments asking for "deescalation" of tension after the great satan just killed a government representative of a UN member nation.

Imprison Trump? How about have him taken into custody by the Navy Seals as a prisoner of an undeclared US war? They know how to treat prisoners.

Here is a closeup of Soleimani's vehicle after it was struck - There is also another one I cannot locate at the moment, that shows his mangled vehicle which is reminiscent of how the evil ruling elites tried to obliterate JFK's head in Dallas.

Obama routinely droned terrorists abroad, including American citizens, who presented far less of a threat to Americans than Soleimani. He was a terrorist in the middle of planning more terrorist activity.

Perhaps it would have been a better idea to send Iran $1.7 billon in unmarked bills, in pallets on planes in the dead of night, so Soleimani could kill more Americans? Wasn't that Obamas strategy?

I consider OpEdNews members intelligent. However, this comment is NOT intelligent it repeats what some biased media has spread lies.

With respect to the return of Iranian money to Iran; during the Shah of Iran's time Iran had invested money in USA companies and buildings. This was investment money in essence, not money for the USA to keep. The USA, in keeping the funds or letting US courts pay unfounded claims unfairly took advantage of the fact that the name of Iran was mentioned in the claims. The bogus claims drained Iranian holdings in the USA and in other Western countries. In the end, only a fraction of Iranian money was returned to Iran after the agreement (P 5 + 1) was signed in 2015.

On March 14th, 2016 Iran announced that it would never pay the $10.5 billion that a USA court demanded it pay for the 9/11 attacks. The same Bill-Clinton-appointed judge who had ruled, on 29 September 2015, that Saudi Arabia has sovereign immunity for 9/11 and so can't be sued for it, ruled recently on March 9th that Iran doesn't have sovereign immunity and fined Iran $10.5 billion to be paid to 9/11 victims and insurers; "The ruling is ludicrous and absurd to the point that it makes a mockery of the principle of justice while [it] further tarnishes the US judiciary's reputation." (Source: by Eric Zuesse March 16th 2016.)

Seems TruthWillPrevail2020, has difficulty remembering when Reagan supported Iran?

Reagan's campaign team was negotiating with Iran about release of hostages after winning 1980 election. click here

You do recall the first Act as president, Reagan unfroze Iranian assets held in the USA? click here

Reagan was also caught selling weapons to Iran, as the Iran-Contra weapons for cocaine scandal proved. .youtube.com/watch?v=hCfIcvTF1uA

Though I'm no Democrat, Reagan's Benghazi was the Beirut Marines barracks bombing and his Wag-the-Dog moment was the more than 12 Special Forces who lost their lives in the "liberation" of Grenada from a bunch of Cuban manual laborers.

As for the IMPOTUS, King Con Don, he needs a distraction from the Impeachment, wants to help out his buddy Bibi and fulfill the agenda of Regime-Change in Iran; while Commander Bone Spurs MacPussy Grabber is seen as tough as the tyrants he admires- Putin, Xi, and Kim. Which is tRump's intent to achieve after the sel...er election.

I agree with your sentiments, however, do you not favor some multi polarity to check full spectrum dominance by one faction of ruling elites over the entire planet? Of course there are reasons to be suspicious of any government that is owned by the powerful.

We have a Russia that loves nuclear energy despite having lost a nuclear powered satellite with its debris scattered across Canada and we have the glorious Chernobyl still percolating and creating mutations for at least the next 100,000 years.

Enter the Chinese with their hyped brain wave interfering 5G mobile phone architecture that the US MIC is envious of but also diligently working diligently with the command and control security state to eventually deploy primarily against us and anyone else that buys the death ray...

and finally the Chinese gene edited humans have arrived with possibly unintended genetic bacterial material introduced right next to the target edited sites. I doubt these immoral scientists and government officials will allow any biometric examination of that DNA. Pray that these genetically modified organisms don't sneeze on the train or plane or in a high wind area.

We are so toasted...and clueless.

W Bush used 9/11 ("explosives used on 9/11 say Commissioners") as his reason for his endless wars in the Middle East, starting with Iraq ("they acted with deceit and with falsehood") - "7 countries in 5 years", said Gen Wesley Clark, "a policy coup", with Iran still remaining 'on their #PNAC list' of '7' to be 'destroyed ("regime change"). Obama ('failed' to investigate 9/11 or investigate or prosecute W Bush for 'war crimes' and 'torture') used 9/11 (they 'planned 9/11' from the 'caves' in Afghanistan) to keep the Middle East wars going - Trump has not cited 9/11 as his reason for assassinating the Iranian General Suleimani with a drone attack. He's 'protecting American lives' he says, and as such, whether true or otherwise, the congress and the American people are surely likely to rally around the president as Iran 'war fever heats up', with Netanyahu 'pleased' and 'cheering us on', just as Russia, China, and Iraq, will 'rally' for Iran, even to 'the fatal end' of 'all concerned'.

I'm not sure what has happened to this site. When people who identify as "progressives" are cheering the assassination of a military leader from a country literally buried in and surrounded by aggressive US military bases, what hope is there. This is a payback to Trump's biggest donor, the Israeli Sheldon Adelson. make Israel great again. I hope some of you will rethink your posture on this impending war.

Time to clean house in Washington. The cabal that thought up this maneuver is totally insane. Anyone that feels that war with Iran is a winner is hallucinating. The most powerful drug is power and t'Rump and his gang of idiots are all addicted. They are the real terrorists. It is truly time for a revolution.

I consider OpEdNews members intelligent. However, some comments are not intelligent. Some members repeat what some biased media has spread lies.

More at:

https://www.opednews.com/articles/The-USA-and-Iran-Strains-by-Mohammad-Ala-Agreement_Illegal-Settlements_Iran_Sanctions-180119-626.html

UK/USA/Russia have brought nothing but suffering to millions of innocent Iranians who have NOTHING to do with their government.

The disastrous relations and illegal sanctions have brought sufferings to millions of elderly, children and ill Iranians including four million refugees who have escaped to Iran from Russia/USA/UK aggressions.

There are laws and international UN rules to follow to keep us from being savages.

Iran has genuine issues with Russia/USA/UK which have been ignored, especially in kangaroo courts.

If media shows the world that assassination is fine, others might justify if for doing similar things which is wrong.

Thanks Lila Yourk, Thanks John Trott, Thanks Ken Swiatek.

Of course when it comes to Iran, no good deed will go unpunished...and it hasn't.

Perhaps like Russia, Iran will forget about peace with the west, just as Russia, finally given up on being accepted by the US and European ruling elites. Why did it take so long? One would think that for the Russians after losing nearly 26,000,000 peoples by the end of WWII, that would have been reason enough to stop trying to accepted as a friend by the west - Instead they suffered just as you point out that the Iranians have suffered all the while adjusting to the restart of the cold war and sanctions brought on by the Obama people...and the meme, Iran "bad".

Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova:

"In addition to the escalation of tension in the region, which will certainly hit millions of people, this will not lead to anything," she added. The diplomat drew attention to the fact that over the past five to six years, the United States has repeatedly blocked statements by the chairman of the UN Security Council condemning attacks on embassies of other countries. "There are a lot of examples," she stressed.

Is this hyperbole? On the other hand the statement is confusing in stating that the US strike will not lead to anything...anything positive I suppose.

Thank you Mohammad - I will try to be less strident this year! Just don't tase me bro! At 1:56 of this video of 2007, the restrained John Kerry dissenter says don't tase me bro, where upon as if on cue, the security state wannabees repeatedly tase him and advise him to "shut up." The only words missing between shut and up was the and f uck.

It is interesting how this american audience tolerated this mistreatment. I don't think most american audiences would tolerate such behavior by security, but what the hell do I know? I voted socialist in 1978.

What needs to happens as soon as possible: 1. All high level foreign policy and national security secretaries and advisors must resign in protest of the long line of abuses and in competencies this president has perpetuated. The withdrawal from the treaty with Iran and now murder of an Iranian General (Likely a pissing contest between him and Iran's president)are simply stupid .. perpetuated by childish immature and dangerous national thinking. 2. The congress then needs to pass laws " now " preventing this president from taking any further action until they can work out plans or this president is gone from office. Make this guy powerless in effect until changes are made. We can no longer tolerate a possible WWIII and must start now to repair the damage he has done. We also need to draft new rules that repair the glaring governmental abuses such as those from the the report on CIA released in 2014 about the totally rogue torture that even Bush did not know about. It is this kind of crap that leads the people to be very concerned about a deep state. We have to stop that AND the likes of Trump from ever happening again. Policies of total transparency must be demanded by the public. The 'secrets' kept by government are getting us into more trouble than they are saving. America's must take more responsibility for their government's actions through transparency and time for input. We will have a much better nation when the people are educated and keep up to date.

It is a well known control by a transnational criminal cabal. We know who owns them and how its done, unfortunately they are insides the Gates. Ask who you can not criticize and if answered correctly you will have your answer.....

Qasem Soleimani has been in control of Iran's Quds Force for more than 20 years. His current greatest hits include helping Bashar al Assad slaughter hundreds of thousands of his own people in the Syrian civil war, stoking the Houthis in Yemen's civil war, and overseeing thekilling of hundreds of Iraqi protesters recently demonstrating against Iranian influence in their country.

But most importantly for Americans, Soleimani was behind the deaths of hundreds of American soldiers during the Iraq War. Last year, the U.S. State Department put the number of Americans killed by Iranian proxies in Iraq at 608 since 2003.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/02/trump-just-took-out-the-worlds-biggest-bad-guy-qassim-soleimani.html

Yet OpEd readers are defending him. All because you hate Trump that much. Unbelievable.

This disgusting human being was also involved with the Benghazi attack which Obama and Clinton allowed to happen. The attack on the US embassy in Iraq was an act of war. Trump stopped another Benghazi. There are countless accounts on the internet of Iraqis and Iranians celebrating at the death of this monster.

Actually, one might say the push for non-war ended when Pelosi took impeachment off the table against Bush for sending our youth to war in Iraq on untruths. Hat would have gone a long way to stopping the illegal invasions of sovereign nations that followed.

Of course, Pelosi couldn't very well have impeachments hearings that would have involved war crimes such as torture because she would have been implicated in those as she knew we were torturing people but refused to acknowledge it thus making her complicit in those war crimes.

Once again after the fact we will discover the attacks on our Embassy in Iraq will have been orchestrated by our own CIA. The truth is our nation is so far out of control all inhabitants of this planet are in harm's way.

Millions need to take to the streets with demands to REMOVE AND PROSECUTE TRUMP immediately. If a maniac unilaterally putting the entire world at risk for WWIII isn't justification enough, then it doesn't exist.

If that fails, I'm rooting for China and Russia to join forces with Iran in doing whatever is necessary to kick America's ass.

Although the axes are out for DT those of us who have been paying attention understand who the powers behind the throne are and have been for decades of war and destruction. Obama served these masters by whispering sweet nothings to the American people while the War Pigs fed at the trough, the wars raged on:

Gen'rals gathered in their masses,

Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction,
Sorcerer of death's construction

In the fields the bodies burning,
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind,
Poisoning their brainwashed minds
Oh Lord yeah

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role for the poor, yeah

Time will tell on their power minds,
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess,
Wait 'till their judgement day comes, yeah

Now in darkness world stops turning,
Ashes where the bodies burning
No more War Pigs have the power,
Hand of God has struck the hour

Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees the war pigs crawling,
Begging mercies for their sins
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings
Oh Lord yeah

It has been said and I am hearing it repeated more often now (a Quickening?), "that there is another super-power; the rest of the world..."

There are those who have gone before us who have noted this cycle of death and destruction, were they on opposite sides of the coin or just neutral observations and does it really matter as the message from both is very clear.

"That there are men in all countries who get their living by war, and by keeping up the quarrels of nations, is as shocking as it is true; but when those who are concerned in the government of a country, make it their study to sow discord, and cultivate prejudices between nations, it becomes the more unpardonable, War is the gambling table of governments, and citizens the dupes of the game." -- Thomas Paine "The Rights of Man", circa 1792

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State." Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels

Lon, thank you for the link to Peter Dale Scott. I followed up and found this link to his web site which I hope to explore further very soon.

As to "a global Pax Americana unrestrained by international law ...", which I would refer to as a transnational criminal cabal not constrained by its citizen's duties and responsibilities to forming a more perfect union. There is no excuse for failing to restrain those who act in their name, citizens slumber under what Samuel Clemens referred to as "grotesque self deception" which brings a better sleep at night.

We do expect one to at least restrain their Pit Bull or Junk Yard Dog for the safety of one's neighbor and assume and atone for neglect of responsibilities and damages incurred.
