Tomorrow's Republican "Governing Agenda", A Formula for Governing Not

Tomorrow, House Republicans are to unveil something they're calling a "governing agenda", supposedly reminiscent of the 1994 "Contract with America" hoping this new ploy will bring a similar result (control of the House) this November as happened some 16 years ago.

It's supposed to entail a plan for creating jobs and reduce unemployment as well as recommending a plan to curb government spending and reduce the deficit.

But from here the very idea of a Republican "governing agenda" is farcical and a contradiction in terms. Now, out of power, they have one goal and one goal only and that is to regain majority power in the House, the Senate and in two years, the White House. Meanwhile they'll continue to resist and obstruct any proposals sponsored by the Democrats.

They have no core beliefs save for cutting taxes and will say and do anything, regardless of the truth, in their headlong, ruthless and unprincipled pursuit for regaining power.

They will pander to the "tea party" enthusiasts if they believe it is to their advantage i.e. refer to Obama as a Muslim who secretly wants to install Islamic Law ("Sharia") in the land, that he's a "Socialist" and wasn't born here and berate the Democrats as perpetuating the current economic malaise while ignoring their own culpability, and that of the Bush administration, on whose watch this "great recession" began in late 2007 and exploded in the fall of 2008.

Now with the Supreme Court's decision in the Citizen's United v/s the FEC case that gave corporations the ability to spend unlimited funds to influence election campaigns, we are about to witness and be inundated with an avalanche of right wing funded ads (without knowing the moneyed interests who sponsor these ads). The Republicans and their sponsors will undoubtedly break all previous spending records to get more of their obstructionists elected which will serve to further inhibit and stall the enactment of legislation that could benefit the many who are struggling.

As to their idea of creating jobs and reducing the federal deficit they still cling to the false belief that cutting taxes, particularly for the rich will translate ("trickle down") into expanding middle class employment. This fallacy has been shown to be a false assumption in the past yet they will trot it out anyway, believing the gullible and easily forgetful American people will fall for this scam again.

Then in order to reduce government spending and cut the deficit they'll want to reduce the social safety net i.e. cut unemployment benefits, reduce Medicaid and food stamps and privatize Social Security. Meanwhile they'll continue to vote for and fund our unnecessary wars and keep the bloated defense budget intact (the two items alone that contribute more to our exploding deficit than anything else).

Whatever the Republicans will offer tomorrow as a "governing agenda" is a ruse, a chimera that masquerades as a policy for governing.

Republicans "reign" as if having the divine right of kings when they hold the reins of power. That's a whole lot different than proposing legislation that could benefit the people including the misguided followers who fall for their propaganda and vote for them.

Tomorrow Republicans will bring nothing new to the table, just a repackaged, reconstituted list of nonsense that will appeal to their choir. Hopefully the rest of the people (if they care to listen at all) will see through the charade and dismiss it as just so much pontificating hot air.
