A US war with Iran? Is this about to happen? Is Trump behind it or is it someone else? One wonders. It was Trump's national security adviser John Bolton who "ordered" the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group and bomber force to the Middle East "to send a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime that any attack on United States interests or those of any of our allies will be met with unrelenting force." Then there's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at an Arctic conference in Finland saying of Iran, "We've seen escalatory actions from the Iranians and...we will hold the Iranians accountable for attacks on American interests...(If) these actions take place, if they do some third-party proxy, whether that's a Shia militia group or the Houthis or Hezbollah we will hold the...Iranian leadership directly accountable for that." What "attack on United States interests"? What "third-party proxy"? Neither Bolton or Pompeo would say exactly. But the "Iranian leadership" would be held directly accountable. Of course it doesn't matter whether the Houthis, Hezbollah, some unidentified "Shia militia group" or some "third-party proxy" would be or are controlled by the Iranian leadership-to which there is no evidence-but who needs evidence, when accusations, insinuations is all that matters. And why is an un-elected adviser to Trump, namely Bolton "ordering" a US battle group to the Middle East? One has to ask is Trump the president or is it Bolton not exactly acting as an adviser behind the scenes? Then of course there's Israel's recently re-elected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu whose primary wet dream has the US going to war with Iran. There's also Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salmon or MbS of Saudi Arabia who'd like nothing better than a US war with Iran, seeing the Shiite Iranian Republic as his worst enemy. Now with Trump this week ending the waivers previously given to all countries buying Iranian oil the intention to drop to zero Iran selling any of its oil-even though a complete embargo would never likely succeed-it would have the effect of squeezing Iran mercilessly bringing the world ever closer to a new hot war. Though Trump had campaigned in 2016 saying he'd scrap the Iranian nuclear deal that Obama signed onto in 2015 it wasn't till May, 2018 that he actually reneged and pulled the US out. Was it significant or just a coincidence Bolton became Trump's national security adviser one month before Trump pulled the plug on the Iranian deal? Does it matter? Besides Bolton there's Pompeo and Vice President Mike Pence all reading from the same play book regarding Iran. Also remember Trump recently designated the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as terrorists-which Iran reciprocated calling the US Central Command a terrorist organization. It might be a stretch to equivocate the US embargo of oil to Japan in August 1941-that prompted the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor five months later which precipitated the US entering WWII-with a US embargo on Iranian oil some 78 years later, but embargoes are acts of war, not some idle threat toward an adversary. There's a US presidential election next year with Trump presumably running for a second term. Whether there is some calculation within the Trumpsters "brain" trust-calling them that in itself is quite the stretch-that sees war with Iran as beneficial to Trump's chances in 2020 is anyone's guess but there is nothing this writer would put past the mad crowd in or near the Oval Office. There's just no sane entity anywhere in this administration capable of stopping this mad rush to war with Iran. What seems incredible is there's no sense of the Trump mob considering the consequences a war with Iran would bring. And that in itself reveals they truly are mad.
