President Barack Obama in an earlier address to a joint session of Congress
There is little doubt the most disturbing element of "official" Washington is its insidious nature, never presenting an honest accounting of anything of significant consequence to the people. It cannot be trusted.
The "truth"-or at least a close proximity-is always hidden and what is reported by it and now its complicit, corporate MSM is deception-dissembling- distortion of the facts on the ground-misinformation or outright lies.
It's all completely inscrutable. The difference between a totalitarian regime and our supposed "democratic" one is the people in the former know they are being lied to and believe nothing of its government while here in the US what the government presents and is trumpeted by the MSM comes to be believed by most of the people-hey we're the "good guys", the "terrorists" or whomever is the latest "bogeyman" contrived by Washington is demonized, must be targeted fought against by us or one of our proxies and why its necessary to have all this intrusive surveillance, intelligence gathering of suspects without reasonable cause being necessary; all to instill fear in the people while presenting it all as necessary to keep us safe.
Of course the underlying "truth" of why its all necessary to have these measures and why today the latest "enemy" must be contrived as a menace is because if the people knew the truth there would be no basis for building the aircraft carriers, atomic subs equipped with MIRV's, a new class of jet fighter, helicopter gun ships, drone and missile attacks, a nuclear arsenal that could destroy the world many times over, the whole edifice would be exposed as a complete sham and the $trillion dollars spent each year is completely unnecessary and a good reason to shut it all down-even though its all presented as good jobs and good for the economy. How about taking that government spending and rebuild the nations crumbling infrastructure, roads, bridges, upgrade the public transportation network and build a rail system to accommodate high speed bullet trains-now impossible with the present decrepit rail system. But I digress.
When the Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1991 and the cold war against Communism ended there was a sort of lull with no "enemies" of consequence to justify the outrageous defense spending and the necessity of building these aforementioned weapons systems, some new "enemy" had to be conjured up.
It took 10 years and 9/11 happened. Regardless of how anyone believes who perpetrated this crime, the results since are unmistakable; the global war on terrorism, Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda, now ISIS, the invasions and occupations of Afghanistan, Iraq, drone and missile strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, the Patriot act, NDAA which gives the president the authority to hold anyone indefinitely, including Americans he alone deems a threat until hostilities cease-which means forever in the endless war on terror, the targeting of anyone for assassination by the president including American citizens. Why capture and detain a suspect when it's easier to order a missile strike and kill him. It's all part of the "unitary executive" concept first initiated by "Dubya" Bush and continued seamlessly by Barack Obama. What we've come to know is the Justice Department is told to write memos giving "legal" cover to anything the executive does and kept secret for reasons of national security. And the big kicker with all these executive policies and actions is it's all under executive authority and can't be challenged by Congress or the courts.
So with this unitary executive doctrine-which is nowhere to be found in the Constitution-the separation of powers that is written and delineated in the Constitution essentially becomes null and void with a usurpation-a sort of quiet coup having occurred with hardly anyone noticing-making the presidency in reality a dictatorship while we continue the charade of electing our leaders as if we're still a republic.
Nixon sort of attempted the scheme in the early '70's with his chief of staff ordering the Watergate "plumbers" to break into the Democratic campaign headquarters-along with the other crimes we came to know he and his "CREEP" --Committee to elect the president-mob committed.
But Watergate was investigated by a few diligent members in Congress who challenged and exposed the executive wrongdoing, eventually got him impeached, forced his resignation and by the late 70's put in place the FISA court along with some Congressional oversight of the executive-think the Iran/Contra scandal in the 80's during the Reagan administration. And we all know the Congressional Republican induced charade impeaching Bill Clinton over his sexual proclivities in the oval office.
As to the FISA court it's become essentially a rubber stamp for whatever warrant the government asks for and under "Dubya" was completely ignored.
What has become evident, not just with the coming of Barack Obama, is no president elected under the current two party duopoly, can even begin to rectify the wrongdoing of the US empire. Ditto the same for a congress completely under the influence of the moneyed interests that underwrite their electoral campaigns making reform of this system a mirage.
You have to hand it to the marketers and PR crowd in the government and private industry-in a morbid sort of way; they've successfully made most of the people somnambulant or insouciant, without a care; while those still conscious are afraid to challenge the lies.
Think of the universities; they too have been usurped and in league with the government, their professors become toadies and stooges too afraid to lose their government grants should they challenge the government. Well so much for "academic freedom" and the independence of the university.
Yet what is most disquieting to this writer if the people were told the truth-they are but only in the alternative media and certain internet sites-I suspect they wouldn't allow themselves to believe it, being too uncomfortable and too terrible to accept it, much less do something about it.
That of course remains to be seen.
