Sinister, insane, mean spirited; take your pick or better include all the adjectives that best describe our "government" aka the military/corporate/political complex, a cabal of intersecting and overlapping interests that exercise control over this country.

This should hardly be a new revelation to readers of this space, just an updated version, admittedly prompted by the latest madness emanating from Capital Hill and the Congressional shutdown of the federal government by the tea party crazies inhabiting and controlling the Republican Party.

The shuttering of the federal government's services, national parks and monuments just hurts the people but hey, the people have been superfluous to the "government's" doings long ago. This is just the latest instance of governmental mean spirited insanity.

There was a time we were a republic, where president's at times acted in and represented the people's interests i.e. Teddy Roosevelt establishing the federal National Park system thereby controlling and containing the mad exploitation of the nation's great forests by commercial interests that were hell bent in managing the despoiling of everything in their path all over the country.

Then Franklin Roosevelt, at the height of the great depression, establishing the Social Security system that still keeps older citizens from utter poverty and destitution.

In the mid 1960's Lyndon Johnson established Medicare which provided health care for the elderly, a single payer system (operating outside the private, corporate controlled health care system) which most people according to polls would like implemented for the entire population.

But aside from these initiatives mentioned above that actually benefitted the people, our republic has since descended into an empire, gained pre-eminence after W.W. II, was temporarily counterbalanced and offset in the 41 year cold war with the Soviet Union but since 1991 been the lone super power exercising hegemony over the world.

And since 9/11, been sinister initiating pre-emptive wars and occupations based on lies, contriving an unending "global war on terror", killing innocents in drone attacks and missile strikes, even assassinating and murdering its own citizens.

Add in the recent and ongoing revelations by Edward Snowden of the NSA's clandestine monitoring and data mining of all electronic communications, foreign and domestic, this sinister system has become completely unhinged and will resort to any measure to maintain its omnipotence at any cost.
