This is statement directly from Senator Martin Heinrich, without any media interpretation or reiteration.

Dear Friends:

If you're watching the impeachment trial at home and you're a little bit confused, you're probably not alone. If you're wondering why this looks different from any trial you've ever seen, whether it's a made for TV trial or your own experience in a courtroom, it's because this doesn't look like any other trial. Before we go any further, I wanted to take a moment to let you know what I've seen so far. I hope you can take a moment to watch and share my video update below.

Last week, I took an oath to solemnly do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws. I strongly believe that every single senator needs to grapple with the gravity of this moment and take our constitutional duty as jurors seriously. A fair and impartial trial requires witnesses and documentary evidence. We need to hear from all relevant witnesses and see all relevant evidence as we consider the severity of the president's misconduct and weigh the articles of impeachment the House has presented us.

Unfortunately, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans spent the entire opening day of this trial preventing the Senate and the American people from viewing documentary evidence or hearing from witnesses. They have shut down every opportunity for witnesses and documents. They are creating an environment that clearly serves as a cover-up of the president's actions.

I am utterly disappointed in where this is going because I think it is an obvious attempt to shield all of us from the facts. The American people expect us to search for the whole truth as we seek to do impartial justice. I want you to know that I will continue to do everything in my power to get to the facts and the full truth.

Sincerely,

MARTIN HEINRICH
United States Senator

On the other hand, the Democrats have their three days to present on video all the witnesses they called for the impeachment hearings. Pelosi, Schiff, and Nadler all have said that the evidence collected at the hearings provided all that was needed, so they seem to be wanting to have it both ways: enough witnesses but not really enough.

A bit more compelling in person, don't you think? Further, the gravity of a Senate trial to my thinking supersedes video evidence.

I wouldn't mind hearing from a couple of the people the Dems wanted to subpoena, like Bolton or the guy from the budget office, but I don't think it would change anything since Trump pretty much did everything he's accused of out in the open. The question is whether any of it rises to "high crimes and misdemeanors" and how long Schiff gets to keepthe balls in the air. I'd like to vote Trump out of office, but I feel this Ukraine stuff is just a continuation of the Russiagate junk that Clinton started even before the 2016 election. Highly unscrupulous.

The real value of the witnesses is what affect they have on the American Voters, given, as you have pointed out, the votes (67) just aren't there.

My other US Senator Tom Udall is a former 2 term Attorney General of New Mexico. He will do the right thing in this trial, I am sure, although, sadly, he is retiring this year.

This is the most recent clip I could find in this regard.

I've long been of the opinion that Russiagate and its successors, of which there will probably be more if impeachment fails to oust Trump, has a negative effect on the political climate as a whole, based on deception as it is, and will end in giving Trump more support, again because of the dishonesty of it. And even if I'm mistaken in that, the instability of increased hostility towards Russia in a nuclear weaponized world will be a certain result. But good luck with it, we will need all we can get.
